Did anyone see the excellent article on last Wednesday's Blue Peter about the missing episode from Dec 1980 ad how it was restored from a black and white episode and colour VHS? I have the clip as an mpg if anyone missed it.

This sounds interesting - I had a look on the Blue Peter Site for more info but it was a bit limited.
Was it the case that the episode survived in broadcastable form albeit in B/W and was matched up with an off-air VHS or have I got the wrong end of the stick?

The master 1inch tape has gone, so what they had left to rebuild the show was (a) the original colour films from the location sequences, (b)a VHS of the show (c)a b/w telerecording of the whole show (that presumbly was for ecport markets still transmitting in B/W).
The idea was that the colour information from the VHS would be overlayed onto the B/W telerecording and after mixing in the film sequences would produce a broadcast quality master.

The b/w telerecordings of Blue Peter weren't done for export/sales, it was just a regular thing the production office ordered for their own purposes (a bit of a mystery why they kept doing it long after most people had stopped). In fact the quality of the telerecording was too poor to be of use in this restoration, while the quality of the VHS copy was so good that it wasn't needed...

Blue Peter has never been sold overseas, and thankfully the BBC haven't sold the format to other countries either.
It's actually a unique programme in the sense that it's seen as one of those shows that the BBC can't axe, though it has been through a few bad patches in the past, it seems to of settled down again now...until the curse strikes again!
