This highly regarded BBC serial has been released on DVD in Germany, as 'Der Mondschimmel'. Even better, it appears to be the original version, not the radically trimmed re-edit issued on VHS in the UK in the late 1980s. Will confirm when I receive my copy.

This highly regarded BBC serial has been released on DVD in Germany, as 'Der Mondschimmel'. Even better, it appears to be the original version, not the radically trimmed re-edit issued on VHS in the UK in the late 1980s. Will confirm when I receive my copy. Update: The German DVD runs just over 141 minutes and offers a choice of German and English soundtracks. No subtitles or extras. The picture quality is more than acceptable, given its 16mm origins, though there is evidence of minor print damage here and there. Note: The UK version of 'The Moon Stallion', first broadcast in 1978, consists of six 25 minute episodes. The version on this DVD is dated 1980 and consists of three episodes, running between 43 and 50 minutes. The credits are in German and the dubbing cast are listed alongside the UK actors. PS: According to the German credits - and The Mausoleum Club - this serial was a British/West German co-production between the BBC and Sudfunk Stuttgart.

Just finished watching the last episode. I think this serial holds up very well. There are minor flaws, such as some overwritten dialogue and a less than ferocious fight scene, but it has great atmosphere, an interesting take on pre-christian religious beliefs and a fine score. The script and direction are generally strong, while the often striking imagery belies the modest budget and the limitations of the 16mm format. Sarah Sutton gives an excellent performance in the pivotal role and her face - often framed in close-up - is both expressive and extremely photogenic. I've always felt she was largely wasted in 'Doctor Who' and seeing 'The Moon Stallion' again confirms she had a lot more to offer than the one-note Nyssa.
