Sorry, I know this is off topic here, but are you being serious? Is this really true? I ABSOLUTELY PAUL.....!!?? I've seen it twice in the past 5 years (once on the early evening Saturday repeats on BBC1) and it was cut. I wrote about it on a comedy forum and no-one gave a nuts. I was finding my way towards a real forum who'd understand my frustration i.e here!! T. I find that absolutely amazing then..... all this stupid censorship is really ridiculous. As I said earlier, various "words"/"phrases"/"Gary Glitter" etc...etc...etc.. are all part of history and should not just be "cut" because someone thinks they 'might offend' - it's like trying to pretend things never happened! Ironically, going back to the Only Fool's cuts - especially the "p" word references - I know many people from this region of the world who actually (in early eighties OFAH context) actually think it's quite ok to leave this word in.... Still, there you go, that's censorship for you. Wonder what next they'll try and cut out from shows from the past? The mind boggles.....

There is always Derek Longmuir from the Bay City Rollers with umpteen videos and numerous films and internet images found in is house. Not many instances of the Rollers being censored though, Add to that Chris Langham, Roman Polanski, R kelly

I agree that it is a doubtful decision to edit Glitter's performances out of the TOTP shows. On the other hand, EinsFestival is not a commercial TV station but belongs to the ARD which is kind of sensitive regarding expected viewer's reactions because of its public service nature.
And the point is, all those other musicians you mention here like Jonathan King, Derek Longmuir etc. are unknown to the general public in Germany. 99% of all Germans probably never heard of Jonathan King and his sentence and wouldn't care if they did. BUT - Gary Glitter was a real star here in the first half of the 70s and so his story was widely spread in the media. So what caused the decision to edit GG's performances but leave the others in, is probably just the fact that his case is the only one that's made the news here.
So the whole discussion about GG here neglects the fact that EF is not run by music lovers like you and me who want to fill their archives with complete shows, but by people who were in fear of open criticism and so decided to edit the shows rather than not airing them at all.
Just my 2 cents.

There is always Derek Longmuir from the Bay City Rollers with umpteen videos and numerous films and internet images found in is house. Not many instances of the Rollers being censored though, Add to that Chris Langham, Roman Polanski, R kelly Apparantly, the story behind Longmuir is that he was sent a mysterious package one day, and raided the next before he'd even had chance to look at what the package contained... he had to plead guilty to 'possession' as they were there and was sentenced to 300 hours community service... but was later reinstated in his job as a nurse. It has been strongly suggested that their dreadful sex offending manager Tam Paton (who was/is the definition of a 'bad man') was behind the set-up (and if you investigate him be prepared for your hair to curl). The problem with Glitter is that he was always so 'in yer face' anyway, plus he's never once attempted to explain his 'side' etc, but it's absolutely ridiculous to edit someone out of history. The issue of 'paedohysteria' is of course emotive but it has basically become a 'new weapon' - mere allegations can destroy careers and lives. Of course it's different in America - but what is right and what is wrong? The allegations faced by R. Kelly wouldn't have even been an issue 20,30,40 years ago. We all know about Wyman, Presley etc and we all know it's fact that many 'groupies' had by many a rock legend were underage.

Indeed. At the risk of going way off topic how come Lori Maddox is somehow an 'acceptable' part of the Zeppelin story and no-one is in a rush to airbrush Jimmy Page out of history ?
Whether what they did was right or wrong is not the quesiton. It's whether we want a blank canvas as a history book.

A pity they're not slipping in ones they haven't shown! Could be worse though... could be a night devoted entirely to the 1976 shows they've been showing... that would be truly mind numbing!

That edition was orignally scheduled to be shown, but einsfestival pulled it for some reason. G(lITTER BAND) Which if that is reason band should Sue for libel, as None of the Band had anything to do with GGs activies, and one paper has already been rapped for saying so , no prises for gussing which one

I thought that edition was wiped aswell Neil, but einsfestival did originally schedule it. Perhaps the BBC supplied the wrong info and that was the reason it wasn't shown.
