Just been looking at some great clips of the American girl group the Shangri-La's on YouTube over the last few days, its quite impressive what seems to have survived of their American TV appearances. I notice they also briefly toured the UK in the mid 60s and apparently made appearances on Thank Your Lucky Stars and Ready Steady Go. I guess the TYLS appearance no longer exists but has anyone seen the RSG one or for that matter know of any other radio or tv appearances?
PS sorry for asking this as a "guest" I still can't log in!

They are also listed as appearing in a promo video on Top of the Pops on February 4th 1965. And, perhaps most oddly, on 'Ready, Steady, Go!' on April 8th 1966. As I previously mentioned, the group only visited the UK once in 1964, so I'm baffled as to what the RSG appearance could be.
Any help, comments and additions would be most welcome. Thank you.
1966 Ready Steady Go slot maybe just a record playback? Or a promo film at a long shot. Guessing this would have been 'Past Present and Future'/ Incidentally, did the Shangri Las ever appear on US TV after 1966? (and if so, does anything survive?)

Hi James, as far as I can tell The Shangri-las didn't appear on BBC Radio in 64 or 65. They were scheduled to appear on Top Gear on march 20th 1965 but did not appear in the end unless they were interviewed. They certainly didn't perform on that episode.

It's a shame the didn't have more success this side of the Atlantic, along with a few other girl groups from the era.

but I wonder if she was maybe confusing this with 'Thank Your Lucky Stars' on which they both appeared on October 31st? [/p] Of this TV show with Dusty, Mary has commented: "When we went to England we found the British spent more time setting up everything as far as television goes. They're meticulous. I walk into the studio and the entire soundstage was filled with sand and a giant grandfather clock for one song. I could not believe it. It was beautiful. Dusty was on that show."
Sounds like you could be right as TYLS had a novelty group on called 'The SunSpecs' which might explain the beach sand set???

[/p] Nice idea, but Mary is referring to part of the studio being set up specifically for the Shangri-las performing their single 'Remember (Walking In the Sand)' - Hence the clock (as in remember/passing of time) and sand (as in, erm, sand). I can just imagine the grandfather clock in the sand at a jaunty angle. Probably quite a simple yet effective setup. It would be nice to even just see a still from the performance.
Oh Wow! sounds even better. There is of course hope that the promoter was so impressed he/she took away a copy with them.

Again, it's a nice thought, but it seems highly unlikely. I'm not sure about promoter, but their manager who was with them on the trip was Larry Martire, who died in November 2012.
Does anyone have info for The Beat Room, Pop Inn, The Saturday Club and Open House from 22nd - 31st October 1964?
Over to you William.

don't know if this is of any use to anyone but I do remember a promo film of Remember (Walking In The Sand) being shown on TOTP at the time. It featured some girls walking in the sand (looking like they were 'remembering' probably!) As I mentioned in a thread a while back the song scared the hell out me as a 10 year old. Can't for the life of me remember if the Shangri Las themselves featured in the film. No reason why they wouldn't have done I guess.

I've always liked the way Mary Weiss sings a voice of innocence i wish today's female vocalists could sing like she does.

Totps had been conceived by old men grudgingly giving in to the pop explosion, consequently the performances are just flat studio run thrus of the songs..certainly no sand in the studio LOL. When an American or foreign artist could not appear (or had gone home) and the song was still climbing the chart then a previous performance would be replayed or a somewhat bizarre film (no artists) would be substituted-for example Dionne Warwick's Do you know the way to San Jose played to a rather charming film about a donkey. Later of course missing artists were danced to by Pan's People.

The Shangri-La's are by far my all-time favourite girl group, and I've always tried hard to locate footage of them. Here is what I have:

‘The Lloyd Thaxton Show’, February 1965 Give Him A Great Big Kiss / Interview / Shout
‘Shindig!’, 21st April 1965 Medley: Shout – Do The Clam (with Joey Cooper) / Medley: Give Him A Great Big Kiss - I’m A Loser (with Ian Whitcomb) / Out In The Streets
‘Where The Action Is’, 1st July 1965 Remember (Walking In The Sand)
‘Shivaree’, 2nd October 1965 Give Him A Great Big Kiss / Right Now And Not Later
‘Shindig!’, 23rd October 1965 Thirty Days / Right Now And Not Later / Give Him A Great Big Kiss / Twist & Shout (with Dobie Gray, Glen Campbell and Bobby Sherman)
‘Hullabaloo’, 10th January 1966 Long Live Our Love

Think you might find "Where the Action is" is owned by Dick Clark Productions still...
