Does anyone know if we are ever going to get a decent release of this?

Well, we got one a couple of years back. Apart from Vidfiring the prints (which is one thing i'd like to see personally), I can't see as it's going to get much better unless someone finds the colour tapes or attempts reverse standards conversion to extract the colour information! The episodes on the DVD were cleaned up quite a bit in comparison to the VHS release in the '90s. Not perfect, no, but then a lot of TV releases aren't.

Thanks. I meant more in the way of extras such as documentaries; etc.
Hard to know if Network (presumably) would want to do something special.
Hope so!

From the situation a few years back, where nothing seemed likely to transpire, to what we have today, Im reasonably pleased. On the DVD release, theres a few good interviews with the surviving cast and at least the episodes are there to watch. Its a cult show, lets be realistic. I too, would love to see the footage Vidfired, but I dont think that could be justified to be honest. Im just pleased I have the lot on disc now, to browse through when I feel like it. Oooooooooohhhhhhh, Liz !

Apart from Cheryl Burfield it was a pretty complex show for its target audience.
Let's hope Russell T Davies doesn't decide to do a "re-imagining"!

Adrian Last said.................Let's hope Russell T Davies doesn't decide to do a "re-imagining"!
It would be interesting Adrian, to say the least. Lets see, perhaps in the first series with the Germans, Liz would probably fall in love with her own, younger Dad.........as perhaps would Simon. And in the Icebox series, Liz would possibly have an affair with her older self. Now that WOULD be good telly ! Oh, and if Liz's Mum, Jean, didnt, at some stage, have an affair with Traynor, who eventually turned out to be an alien, I'd eat my hat !

i bought the dvd release ages ago the front covers in colour but all bar one episode in in b/w why can't someone colourise the entire series! If there is chroma information in the telerecordings then colour recovery (like Planet of the Daleks) may be possible. If there is no chroma information then each episode would have to be colourised - costing a small fortune. 2|e were prepared to fund (with a good pound - dollar rate) coloursisation of one episode of Planet of the Daleks (before colour recovery came along) as it would complete a six part story which they could release with Frontier in Space to, effectively, make a twelve parter. Dr Who releases on DVD seem to sell well - and this was a Dalek story. Unless a generous millionaire came along the costs of colourising twenty five (although two were made in b&w) b&w episodes of Timeslip would be prohibitive.

I've heard conflicting reports on whether the Timeslip (or any ITV )t/rs contain the colour information. Has anybody here examined any of the prints to say one way or the other?
As John says, a full colourisation would, in theory, be possible with modern technology (there are a lot of colour photos too, for reference) even if the t/rs contained no chroma dots. It's just the cost of such a venture that would decide if it happened. The DVD release though is pretty good, with the prints at least looking much better than the '90s VHS versions. It's a seminal kid's series though, I reckon, and as such deserving of a decent restoration - even a b/w scrubbed up / Vidfired version would be better than nothing...

When colour recovery first hit the headlines the impression I got was that it was sloppiness (thankfully !) at the BBC that resulted in the notch filter not being used. I don't think anybody has made any statements about ITV practices. Is there anyone around with first hand knowledge of ITV telerecording in the 70s ?

I'm still looking to the time when home packages could be used to enhance recordings. 'Pixcell plus' on certain plasma TVs seems to automatically VidFire anything played on them ( ! )
I s'pose all that's needed is an amateur genius who can work out how to tease colour info from copies of originals containing chroma info ( !? )
