As a current Open University student, I was wondering if any old programme recordings exist, especially from the OU`s start in 1971? I seem to remember watching some early black and white mathematics or science programmes being broadcast late at night in the mid 80`s, but alas the BBC no longer broadcast OU programmes.

Good question! My guess is that quite a few will survive in one form or another. Not sure if the BBC take control of this in their archive or whether it comes under the OU itself though. Many of the programmes were repeated for years after their production (some of the b/w ones still being on years later too). I expect some will survive on college video off-airs too, as well as t/rs of sales copies (I have one from 1975 as a colour t/r of a VT programme).
Does anyone know the exact archive status of OU programmes though?

I remember seeing some of these in the mid 80s and thinking it was rather funny that the BBC were still showing them! Also think some inspiration was taken from these when Sam Tyler was trying to communicate with the real world in Life On Mars!
