Off topic as I assume from what I know series one of PLEASE SIR exists all on B+W V-T.
I recently saw the film version again and Peter Bayliss plays Dennis Dunstables Dad; as he did in the series around 1970 - 71.
However I have a memory of the first series. My Gran on Mums side was over and made a joke putting her false teeth in a bag of sweets and saying 'Ill have this one' when offered. I thought these were novelty candy teeth (like 'Sugar mice') and wanted one myself!.
PLEASE SIR was on; and I recall it was an episode where Mr Hedges goes back to see what Dennis' home life is like. His Dad threatened to throw a potty from the shed over him and I'm sure it was contraversial as you could almost see its simulated contents.
Now I'm sure Jack Woolgar played Dennis' Dad in this episode?
I later found a copy shelved of 'The Evening News' we had from Nov 1968 and there was a new series of 'PLEASE SIR' starting then which dates it more accurately.

Jack Woolgar turns up in a later colour episode as a war veteran whom I think Dennis befriends, hes quite an unfriendly old chap but maybe you are thinking of this episode?

All the series are out on Network DVD, John. You should probably be able to get a very good deal on them online right now. I've frequently seen series 1, for example, for around |£7 - £8. The others go for similar.

About six months back ZAVVI had a tie in for Network comedy titles for that price. I looked in the branch in Croydon. Not only do they not have PLEASE SIR titles anymore they have nearly cleared out the whole shop. ZAVVI Oxford St have got the Benny Hill titles but no PLEASE SIR. Down to Piccadilly Circus (old Tower records) and its all barred up. A notice says they have gone into administration. HMV do have the box I want - series 2; but at the top price (20 pounds); so much for recession sales prices!

No, i'm talking about buying online, John. Much easier than trudging round busy London shops or even having to monitor Men & Motors / editing out ads etc. They're cheaper on the net and you get pristine versions minus ads with no effort at all!

Ahhh - I wondered about that line of enquiry but didn't consider as I thought the prices weren't held reduced by the release company. Good shall have to look into that.
