Network are releasing this ABC/Thames series - or what's left of it - in March. As I understand it, eight episodes have survived, two from the first series and all of series four and five.

Does this include the Jack Hawkins / John Laurie episode? Yes, 'The Open Door' still exists from series one, along with 'The Fall of the House of Usher'.

This Is Great News indeed that this series is finally getting a DVD release. Also am hoping that these episodes, and whatever other material have been restored ( would be great to see the ABC David Hamilton preview for Casting The Runes on this release, as would make a fine extra) to the best possible quality, depending on the budget of course. Have seen that Amazon.co.uk has slated this release for the 23rd of March, can pre-order from the product page: www.amazon.co.uk/Mystery-Imagination-Complete-Joss-Ackland/dp/B0000D9GPLCheers, Lance.

According to Amazon, this release is now cancelled. Damn. I already had my suspicions, as I never found it listed on Network's website.

I don't think it was ever officially on the schedules really. Amazon and a few others seemed to jump the gun at announcing it before it was actually slated for release. In that case, it's fairly predictable that it would be "withdrawn" again. A shame but I daresay it will come out eventually.

Funnily enough, I remember the ABC episodes as being very atmospheric as much as the later Thames ones (which is really a different series in all but name). It would be good if some more of those turned up although I can't see that Canal + would be very amenable to a DVD release (any more so than they are with any other ABC programmes, that is)!

It may not always help, but I think the moral here is -when obscure releases are announced, always do the pre-order, and get people to click the website so that when the bean counters look at the figures it encourages them to actually release the stuff and not tease us.
IIRC I too think the ABC version was more atmospeheric and had better production values .The Thames versions were a bit shoddy in the production dept with hammy acting- with one exception -Sweeney Todd with Freddie Jones. A wonderful black comedy is how I remember it with a great hinged barber's chair that dropped the customers to their doom.
