Slightly off-topic but I thought people here might be able to help. Elwyn Jones was a regular writer for Z-Cars, right back from the start as I recall, but does anyone know if he ever had any other role on the show? Some sites credit him as a producer on the programme, which I think is probably wrong.
Also, was Barlow his creation? He certainly spent a long time creating the character's post Z-Cars life.
Cheers

The short answer is that he was a drama boss at the BBC who sent Troy Kennedy-Martin off on his fact finding mission to Merseyside in 1961, helped develop Z Cars and was one of the main creative forces right through to Second Verdict. He had unbeatable police contacts right back to the late-50s so was always one step ahead in reacting to changes in the force. His format credits are mainly for Softly Softly, which then bleeds into its direct spin-off Barlow At Large.
Barlow himself was based on a real life police officer.
Lots more on this in David Brunt's forthcoming Z Cars tome.

Thanks for that - interesting. Looking forward to the book. Do we have a 'due date' yet?

Hmmm, I posted in this thread but my posts seem to have vanished.
Elwyn Jones was credited on the final episode of the early seasons as "series editor". Although quite what merited that credit is unknown as he wasn't editor per se.
Due to a rather serious bout of illness at this end in November and December work on the book has been a little delayed.
The release date was planned for March, but it looks like it might be nearer June or even September. Depending how soon I can get the rest of the compilation done.

To pick up on what David has said, there is no release date for the Z cars book at this stage.
It has been delayed for so many years that until it's actually here with us and being costed for printing, we will not be advertising it for any publication date.
It's pointless speculating about anything in the printing world until the hard copy is delivered.
David has been very ill, our sympathies are with him, and we will print the book as soon as it is delivered and can be put back into our release schedule.
This year we already have provisional release dates for books on Play Away and our Comedy Guide so those are going to happen first, but we wont announce dates either until we have confirmed information.
Hope that helps.
Chris
