Recoveries 2008 - The List

I've trawled through all the year's posts from various forums to compile this list of 2008 discoveries.

I've excluded things not officially returned to the correct archives so no mention of things found on YouTube, things bought off Ebay or things 'my mate's dad swears he saw once at a collector's" - this last one is really to accomodate Doctor Who, a series that gets much more than its fair share of hoaxes.

I hope people find it useful, and if I've made errors or missed things out then please let me know.

CONTINUITY:
"Any collection like this, by accident, also has continuity on. Tapes have weather forecasts, continuity girls, trailers for things. Those things are largely missing before about 1980. " Dick Fiddy

NOTES:
The entertainer was among the first people to own a video recorder, but had accumulated reel-to-reel tapes and 16mm film well before VHS and Betamax were invented.
British Film Institute asked to examine the material by Monkhouse's family following his death in 2003.

BFI and television-archiving association Kaleidoscope continue to sift through thousands of tapes and could yet discover some hidden gems. ('36,000 tapes, then the film prints and audio reels on top of that' - Chris Perry)

BFI/MISSING BELIEVED WIPED (14/12/08):
Alastair Sim (Speaking Personally) (BBC 1952) - The family of the late Alistair Sim approached the BFI with a 15-minute gem in which Sim, sitting increasingly uncomfortably in a wing-backed leather armchair, delivers a monologue to camera about the difficulties of delivering a monologue to camera.

Includes little snippet of Janice Nicholls on Big Night Out (1963-5) celebrating her wedding and clip of Kenneth Williams on the Eamonn Andrews show (1966-9)

NOTES:
Sheila Kennedy was given a 2" tape copy of the Midlands version by ABC the night she presented it.
David Hamilton, who presented the North version, also had a 2" tape of his broadcast. He lent the 2" to Kal in May/June 2008

NOTES:
Found by an archivist among a collection of travelogues. This 1950s Granada precursor to Friday Night with Jonathan Ross was filmed in the then bohemian London neighbourhood of Chelsea.
Among the finds are Billie Holiday singing Strange Fruit and John Osborne reading from one of his plays.

In summer 2008 it was reported that Richard Jeffs had found 63 cannisters of film, one of which contained a "lost" Beatles interview from STV show Roundup(?) 1964. The reels also contained approximately 30 admags.

That makes looking at 2008's recoveries a lot easier - thanks! One of the best years for recoveries for quite some time too.

It was Richard Jeffs who found the 63 cannisters of film. He was at the NFT on Sunday and said that the 30 or so admags were amongst these (does anyone have details yet on which titles they actually are?). I'm presuming all these will eventually find their way to the BFI archives as, not so long ago, admags were a very rare thing indeed. I'd be interested in knowing what's on the rest of the reels too.

Nice one... great to see all that info in one post and it makes staggering reading. Easily the best year for recoveries in a long time... probably the best of this decade. Though some good finds turned up over the previous 2 or 3 years, I feared with each passing year less would turn up only this year to prove me wrong! It raises ones hopes that there is still plenty out there waiting to be discovered and unearthed!

I think that this thread is an excellent idea.
I think it would make a very handy and interesting sticky for this site if at the start of every year a new thread was started by the moderators and updated as things are recovered. It would make for very interesting reading as the years progress.

i believe Eds audio recordings are very high quality too
done by direct feed rather than microphone.

Among them, I'm delighted to read that 18 editions of Top of the Pops have resurfaced, which will hopefully be returned to the BBC eventually, but excellent news that they exist at all!

I'm presuming that they're complete editions currently outside the BBC and all visual, rather than sound only, and that the 4 editions from 18/12/69 onwards are in colour?, but like the other shows, these 18 editions will further represent Top of the Pops and music in general from the late sixties into early 1970.

Glad everyone likes the list - it certainly brings home the fact so many gems have re-surfaced in one form or another this year.

It's thanks to people like Paul Vanezis and Chris Perry that we can once again enjoy classic programmes and here's hoping 2009 brings many more exciting recoveries.

I will shortly be putting the final 2008 recoveries list on a new website I've created dedicated to the recovery and restoration of missing TV, radio and film. It's called 'Wiped' and I hope to go live before New Year.

I see it as a e-zine with news, features and, I hope, interviews. It's purpose will be to raise awareness of missing episodes and the people/organisations that work tirelessly to recover them.

I hope it makes a good read for everyone and any help, ideas or advice will always be greatly appreciated.

Lots of stuff found there but I wonder since it's xmas I wonder if any more of those old BBC1/2 xmas symbols ( < 1974 ) will be found? From what I know all that exists are just fuzzy black-and-white photographs.

I believe these TOTP's are audio only - even so, a welcome addition to the archive and Mr. Doolan is to be applauded for taping them in my opinion!

The 25-12-68 one already existed in audio but the 'new' version should be better quality.

It's a shame the recordings aren't visual Mark, but equally, very impressive to have further audio only recordings of what appear to be complete editions of 1967-1970 Top of the Pops. For anything to exist from that period, audio or otherwise is remarkable, and like you and the others, I am delighted that these have resurfaced. While travelling through the Midlands at one point several years ago I recall hearing Ed Doolan on BBC Radio WM who was very good.

Also excellent news about a clearer copy of 25/12/68. The live Love Affair section with opening announcements from Jimmy Savile and Pete Murray are on You Tube and will be an improvement on the invaluable existing recording of that edition.
