I have a query regarding the colour video of David Frost's programme with the Beatles shown in The Beatles Anthology....
At one point George Harrison says to Frost "Are you in colour?" Frost says "No, we're in black and white at present."
But the video is colour! Did they do the same as the colourising of All You Need Is Love? Or was the video recorded in colour, but broadcast in monochrome?
Colin.

No it wasn't originally broadcast in Colour. But remember Intertel or another independent VT company was making these clips in colour for overseas sales which is why we see a colour copy today. The Frost show these were originally on doesn't exist , we only have the colour APPLE copies which look FAB. In the 80's we had a poor colour TR of the performance. It was sold to the US and seen on many US shows in colour. Rowan And martin;s Laugh in and others.. of course others will prove me wrong!! I hope!!

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I remember now - I did see a colour t/r of it sometime in the 80s. I may even have recorded it on my old Betamax! What a difference between the two!!!

Judging by existing video evidence, The Smothers Brothers got the "exclusives" on the clips shot this day and I believe were the first show in America to show any clips from this session.. As before, three versions of "Hey Jude" were shot so different versions could be sold so the Ed Sullivan Show would no doubt had gotten a different clip to the one the Smothers Brothers got and still be able to claim it was an "exclusive"!
George Harrison's colour query is an interesting one. He would had known they were being filmed in colour but maybe, he didn't know WHICH Frost show it was destined for since as far as I know, Frost was spending the weekdays in America hosting his own show which I presume was in colour and then jetting back to Britain to do his weekend shows for ITV. So perhaps that was what Harrison was thinking. He would had owned a colour TV set but known that colour was restricted to BBC2 at that point so knew there was no way this was going to be seen on British TV in colour at that time.
Just a thought anyway.

So there was more than one performance of the songs recorded for this session? Yet more rarities then! Sounds like it could make an interesting DVD all on its own!

I have one of those "pre-DVD" Beatle Boot Video's that has 3 versions of "hey jude" and if you look at the smothers bro's version and compare it to the Frost one the start is very diff rant. new angles and a count in to start.

AFAIK, three versions were shot and distributed of "Hey Jude"and 2 versions of "Revolution" so all in all The Beatles shot 5 clips that day. Nothing unusual... can't remember how many clips they shot at Abbey Road in 1966 for "Paperback Writer" and "Rain" which were done in one day with them shooting some in b+w and some in colour, all intended for different shows... and that was AFTER they had shot the location promo films! Of course, they had shot ten promos in November 1965 during their first session at InterTel. They certainly worked quickly!
Interesting trivial note - Paul McCartney was quite critical of Michael Lindsay Hogg's direction of the "Jude" clips. This can be heard on tapes of an early "Let It Be" session where McCartney accuses Lindsay Hogg of being OTT and cited the "Jude" clip, pointing out they had hired an orchestra for the shoot yet not once did Hogg show a close up of them because he was too busy focussing on the kids. Macca had a valid point... just seems stupid to pay big money for an orchestra who you only see in the distance behind Ringo!
