Hello all.
In addition to the 'Stripe for Frazer' audio recovery, the same collector has also returned to the BBC the complete soundtrack for 'Christmas Night with the Stars' 1968 which includes the 'Dads Army' Christmas sketch which was thought completely missing. The same programme also features some other unique material.
For other 'Dad's Army' fans, an off-air soundtrack of 'Room at the Bottom' was used from the same collector in the restoration of the new colour version which will be screened on December 13th.

The good news just keeps coming! Wow. Must be pretty good quality then. Possibly he has better quality soundtracks for series 1-2 episodes than those on the t/r's as well? |

Thanks for confirming this rumour Paul. Great stuff indeed. So now we have all four Dad's Army CNWTS episodes in audio form (two being visual too). Brilliant.
Why did an off-air recording of Room At the Bottom need to be used. The original black and white film version was ok, wasn't it?

Optical soundtracks can tend to be very crackly, so a decent off-air recording can sometimes be superior. A number of old Doctor Who episodes have had their soundtracks replaced by fan-recorded ones prior to release. Richard |

Shame, as optical tracks tend to offer more opportunities of restoration (simply because you can see what is going on) than magnetic tape which can loose high frequencies and sound a bit GRRRUFF!

I'm sure it has been said (by Mark Ayers) that the 16mm film (comp-opt) recordings rolled off the high frequencies anyway.
If a 16mm sep mag survived that would be a different story.

This must rate as one of the most fruitful periods in a very long time for recoveries of missing material. It brings hope for what else might be lurking in some corner somewhere waiting to be unearthed  Thanks to all those involved in ressurecting this material |

is this a new documentary you are referring to laurence (the one scheduled in for the Dad's Army broadcast) as we have been discussing this on another thread and assumed it might be a repeat!

A further query relating to the Dad's Army audio recoveries. It occured to me earlier if the collector had made recordings of The Battle Of Godfrey's Cottage, Mum's Army or Battle Of The Giants. Each of these TV versions were supposed to have missing scenes that have (supposedly) been lost since the original broadcast, I was wondering if audio recordings of these episodes (should these exist) may go part way to confirming this?

Andy, the full as broadcast version of Battle of the Giants exists, however you may be thinking of an extra scene involving sheep they filmed on location but never used due to time constraints. The BBC screened (twice i think) a version cut down by five minutes) but they have also screened the full version in recent times and that is what was released i believe.
As or the extra scene in Mum's Army, I'm not sure it ever existed in the broadcast version. The tape that David Croft gave Carmen Silvera may well have been from the editing room before the episode was cut down.
I have not heard of anything missing from The Battle Of Godfrey's Cottage - can you please elaborate?

Regarding Optical soundtracks.
they do sound quite poo when you are offerd say a quater inch tape at say 3 and 3quater IPS to work with, A line recoding of course. If the tape is the original and not some 2nd get tape (usally the heads "go out" and your copy loses a LOT of top end) then the scope for "laying back" is greater than some "rolled off" Op track, yes the top end on all Op traks are rolled of at If i remember around 8-10KHZ could be even less. most good 78's have more Frequency response!.
and the Pre-amps in most 16mm Projectors are quite poor. I ran a "jack benny show" though my projector and bypassed the Op-Amp and used a version of my own.. with has NO pre-Equalization.. you can do a HELLVA lot more restoration (IE NR) with a FLAT Transfer!!
then of course you can simply do a little Eqing to get it back to "standard" and you can get a lot more top end back that way
