Hello all
Since xmas isn't really that far away now and after posting in another thread, it got me thinking. I wonder if any copies of any of the old BBC 1/2 xmas symbols exist? I understand that almost everything exists for 1974/5 but I wonder if we will ever see again those symbols from before 1974?
Ok I know TV symbols aren't TV episodes, but they sort of count I guess as they were aired on TV, and some are missing.
Here's some information from the "television" magazine, c. Jan 1990; (Xmas symbols);
(I've just listed 1969-1974 ) here. (To see the actual article, if you are on MHP Private parts look for file number 10132).
--
1969 BBC1 - Globe possibly internally lit; used sequins instead of the more normal curved mirror. Text reads "Chirstmas in colour" with BBC1 underneath. (Again, if you're on MHP private parts, file 7900 may be a 'recaptioned' version of this symbol, used in 1970).
1969 BBC2 - Unknown
1970 BBC1 - As above, but used small reflective snowflakes instead of sequins. Used "bocklin" font for "Christmas on BBC1" text. (I think!).
1970 BBC2 - ?
1971 BBC1 - Very similar to 1969's and 1970s, but with different font for "Christmas on BBC1" text.
1971 BBC2 - Used the normal BBC2 symbol for the time but with coloured swirls that eminated from the centre.
1972 BBC1 - ?
1972 BBC2 - Normal "2" symbol used with tinsel around the edges of the picture. Text reads "Christmas in Colour".
1972 also had a special xmas clock too, normal BBC clock used but with a "abstract, snakelike design around the edge". Used the caption "Christmas Colour" in bocklin font.
1973 BBC1 - Revolving carol singers; text reads "Christmas on BBC1".
1973 BBC2 - Normal revolving 2 symbol but with Glittering stars and a "dazzling ball" within the "2".
1974 BBC1 - Not listed in the "television" magazine but a possible recording has surfaced of this symbol recently. There's also another recording in existance which is different (found on TV Ark) that purports to be xmas 74 but I'm not 100% which is the real one (the first one I mention looks very authentic, it can be found on the MHP Private parts, file 14318). That one looks very much like 1971 though.
1974 BBC2 - Exits, stills can be seen on MHP Private parts (Files 13508 & 13507). Lots of silver stars, orange "2" and ball inside the "2".
Nobody is really sure if the xmas symbol on TV ark was actually aired or not! You can see it in action here ( www2.tv-ark.org.uk/bbc1national/bbc1national1969.html ) though. It's the 3rd one from the top!
Also I must add this. A few years back, TV ark had its own forums (now long since closed). I mentioned some of this on that forum and someone who I can't even remember who it was now(!) mentioned that there had been xmas symbols on the BBC *before* 1969. Wonder if anyone has ever seen those? That person mentioned that the "watchstrap" BBC1 symbol from the 60s had an xmas version. But I can't remember what the person said after that - !
Apologies for any errors.
