There was a sort of tradition of xmas ghost stories on British telly, a few of them were based on M R James stories. I think they made a new one each year for showing over the festive period, like xmas eve or something. There are definitely some available if they havent been deleted, I think the BFI issued at least one. If you pm me I will give you some tips on how to get hold of them all the best G

There were 8 in all, each shown over the Christmas period between the years 1971 - 78 plus an Omnibus one-off in 1968, which is generally considered to be a forerunner to the format. A couple have been released by the BFI (Signalman and Warning) plus the Omnibus edition. I'm not sure if they are still available though. They were not too long ago.
For anyone who doesn't know of them, the stories are:
1968: (Omnibus) Whistle And I'll Come To You (b/w) 1971: The Stalls Of Barchester 1972: A Warning To The Curious 1973: Lost Hearts 1974: The Treasure Of Abbot Thomas 1975: The Ash Tree 1976: The Signalman 1977: Stigma 1978: The Ice House

is the 1968, whistle and i'll come to you in the archives? It's in the archives and on DVD, though possibly OOP now. The BFI released this one, 'A Warning to the Curious' and 'The Signalman' on DVD. It would be great if the BBC issued the whole series as a collection. Perhaps there's a good reason that prevents this, but most have been shown on BBC4 in recent years.

Wasn't "The Stone Tape" one of these as well? It was certainly referred to as "a ghost story for Christmas" - despite not being very Christmassy

It was certainly referred to as "a ghost story for Christmas" - despite not being very Christmassy 'The Stone Tape' was first shown on December 25th 1972, but I think it was promoted as a stand alone ghost story rather than part of the ongoing 'Ghost Story for Christmas' series (which at this point was only two films). Plus it was an original Nigel Kneale script rather than an M.R. James adaptation.

The Stone Tape is a full length play (and shot on tape). The Xmas ghost stories are all short filmed dramas, each lasting about 30 or so mins. They have a very distinctive style and The Stone Tape is not similar to this.

Yes, stone tapes is an entirely separate affair. Extremely good too!
