What happened with the tiny colonies and dependent territories like the Falklands and Ascension Islands? Did they have TV then? (I know Tonga didn't get TV 'til about 20 years ago or something like that) I doubt they could have justified the expense of buying programmes, so did the govenment or the TV companies have anything in operation to send these places TV shows to be shown in school/church halls or the like? If this were to happen, is it likely the TV companies would keep a record of it like they did with their sales?

Some of our forces overseas were (and still are) provided with tv and radio services by the SSVC - havea look at their website www.ssvc.co.uk. Certainly they started a tv service in the Falklands for example after the end of hostilities.

Thanks. So if programmes were sent to the armed forces, were they sent to the colonies? Also what happened to the prints sent to the services? Was there a system in operation to log what went where and when, and if so what about the returns?

I would imagine that they were either destroyed or returned as per contract. As an example, IIRC, New Zealand's copy of "Dr Who": The Power of the Daleks was sent to Singapore in 1972 - no idea if it was Singapura or an army base (poss. 1RNZIR?) who took receipt. If the latter, I'd suspect it was then returned to the BBC who took one look and burnt it...

But what about the really small colonies, was there anything in place to provide them with anything in a cinema-like environment if they didn't have a TV station, or even TV's for that matter?
