Hi - Does anybody recall a very laid back kids series called "Captain Zeppos" ? I may be imagining it but I think it was on back in the late sixties and featured a mysterious boat owner who hung out in small seaside town and solved petty crime. I think it may have been dubbed as it was definitely a "foreign" import. Can anyone shed any light ? Steve

Hello, Was able to find this information on the Kapitein Zeppos TV series, which was a Belgum production on BRT. www.amphicar.com/amphicars_in_the_movies.htmWhen Kapitein Zeppos was launched on Belgian television in 1964, it was the latest in a growing line of memorable children's television productions produced by the BRT. The previous year had seen the light-hearted time travel romp, De tijdscapsule ("The Time Machine") which, in common with Kapitein Zeppos, was directed by Senne Rouffaer and produced by Rik Van den Abbeele. But of all Belgian children's television, it was 1964's entry which would perhaps become the most fondly recalled. Kapitein Zeppos told the story of a mysterious man, Jan Stephorst, who has returned from a life in Greece. There, he became known as Captain Zeppos - the 'captain' because he owned a boat, and 'Zeppos' because the locals couldn't pronounce 'Stephorst'. It is under this moniker that Stephorst returns incognito to his homeland of Belgium to claim his inheritance - the beautiful castle and grounds of the Belderbos estate. His return is greeted with much suspicion among the townsfolk of the nearby Belder, but he is at least welcomed by young Ben Kurrel who quickly forms a strong bond of friendship with the stranger. As the story progresses, it becomes apparent that there is more to the Belderbos estate than either Zeppos or the people of Belder ever realised. Also, was able to find an Belgum Documentary on Zeppos, and includes some of the exported episodes, which were screened in the UK dubbed in english by ( and can be seen in the clip ) BBC Enterprises: www.youtube.com/watch?v=beIR3lTnBAQCheers, Lance.

A new one on me! When I saw the title of this thread, I thought of the mid 80's BBC Childrens show "Captain Zep - Super Space Detective" which must had been one of the cheapest shows ever broadcast!

Thanks Lance, much appreciated, I will check out the Youtube link and see if its as I remember. My mum will be pleased as it was one of her favourites in a slightly tounge-in-cheek way. Steve

What, no-one's linked yet to Alan Hayes' Zeppos site! Here you go... www.zeppos.co.uk/The entire series (without the English dub, unfortunately) has been released on dvd in Belgium. I think Lance is about right when he says it's the most fondly remembered of the sixties-seventies 16 mm childrens' serials made by BRT. As an aside, and talking from a Dutch-speaking perspective, I feel the series is somewhat let down by the overenthusiastic use of RP. Perhaps I would enjoy it more with the English soundtrack. ;D

According to the Zeppos site, the BBC still hold copies of their English dub of the first series.

I recall it being a blue screen job where virtually every set was simply some drawing, as were the villains and aliens! I remember seeing the first episode and everyone at school the following morning were all talking about it... it made Doctor Who of the time look truly out of this world! I can still remember the dreadful theme song as well... though wish I could forget it! lol

Having seen an episode recently, the special effect of Captain Zep's spaceship travelling through space is genuinely quite good - better than anything you'd see on Blake's 7 anyway.....I can only assume they blew all the budget on that one effect!
