When Channel 4 broadcast its New Heores Of Comedy docs recently it was good to see so much non-terrestrial stuff from the early careers of the featured 'heroes' (Sacha Baron-Cohen, M Lucas & D Walliams, et al) - Not because I thought it was lost, but because Channel 4 were willing & able to track it down & re-show it. Would the best bet for tracking down early BSB comedy/variety stuff lie with N Hancock, V Reeves, K Allen etc, even as off-airs, now? Or is this not an area of interest that has yet to be researched?

we've been down the Heil Honey route before... None of them were broadcast on BSB as the "merger" with Sky happened before it was due to happed and as the transmission area for Sky was different to BSB, so all the contracts would have had to be renegotiated before any BSB programme could be broadcast on Sky (short answer!). As I mentioned before, original pilot for HH was shown on C4 only.
BSB Variety & comedy stuff could be researched but no-one would be that keen as no market for it I'm afraid - but Noel Gay did make most of it and if they've dumped the tapes... but again, as I said before, it does beg the question what Sky did with all the BSB masters they inherited.

If you check earlier in this thread, you'll see I mention that The Happening (along with all Noel Gay stuff) seems to be junked! That is especially dread for me as I saw these being filmed live with my brother and a couple of good mates from the time. I think I recall that one of the guys used to record these as we occasionally appeared in audience shots. I havent spoken to him in many years, but im going to have a crack at tracking him down in case hes kept hold of his old video collection. I presume Dick Fiddy would be the person to give these to if I can get hold of them?

It might be a good idea to seek out all we can, yes! Happily I kept a few things myself and others did the same, it seems. Sadly off-airs may be the best hope. It's even possible someone out there recorded a few things on SVHS (which had just arrived at that time) or U-Matic too, as these would be better quality than VHS.

Right, I will start trying to track these down tommorow morning. I guess these were a document of sorts of popular culture at the time and featured many early appearances of some performers who are now very well known and some who are forgotten. Its very tragic that these were junked and I hope he didnt tape over them with some bruce willis films or something utterly rubbish (its entirely likely.). Watch this space.

Some of the performers were unknown at the time but Keith Allen was well known by then through the Comic Strip series etc. so the fact that this, his first series in his own right, is totally missing is a great shame (and some of it's very funny too!) Also, The Happening featured Jools Holland (definitely not unknown thanks to The Tube) and a host of guests such as Nick Lowe. Both of these shows had repeat / release potential yet someone somewhere decided otherwise...just depressing is the only thing I can say! You'd think someone would, by then, have learned the lessons of the past and what happened to the programme libraries of Rediffusion, ABC etc. when a broadcaster went out of business. But no.
