Hi chaps Just thought I'd mention that the two 2" videotapes of Goodbye to ABC which we had transferred to digibeta are being dusted down again at our next event on Sat 6th Sept. We will show the David Hamilton North version again and show the Midlands version, because people on this site have asked us to rescreen them. Look forward to seeing you there in Stourbridge. www.kaleidoscope.org.ukThanks Chris

Argh! I don't think I can make that date, Chris, and I really want to see these pieces of TV history! Will they be screened at a further future event as well, if demand is expressed?
Very nice to know these have been saved and transferred anyway. Thanks to all involved for this. Will the NFTVA be taking copies?

It looks like a fascinating programme for the day, particularly the Z Cars and Arthur Lowe play for me... will look into seeing if I can do it... thanks for the info Chris

Hi Laurence, sorry mate, we will not be repeating the repeat of Goodbye to ABC items after this event, because we have plenty of other old telly to show and we can't endlessly repeat the same items again and again coz time is short at the events.
It's quite funny you say you can't make it, because we had no plans to repeat the David Hamilton one so quick or show the Midlands one which is very similar, and we were persuaded to do so by a friend who said that people would sell their grandmother to see these items again.
I said to my friend that our experience has shown over the years that this is not the case and people get to events dependent on whether they are working or on holiday etc etc, but I was told that for these shows people would drop everything.
I bet him two rounds at the bar that only one person extra would come to Stourbridge to see these items, but 50 people would email me to ask for copies or ask if the BFI could show them.
It seems that people will go to London and pay £5 per ticket for a screening, but they won't come to Stourbridge to a free event, lol. :-)
I think it's safe to say I am going to win my bet, and as far as I know the BFI are not going to screen them.
Sadly when we showed Sexton Blake and Castle Haven it was because people kept asking for us to show them, and we got the smallest audience for 6 years, with the charity losing out.
I think that forums like this and other like Roobarbs make us think that we are huge in number and would do anything to see that rare Z Cars or Out of the Unknown, but my experience is that we are small in number, very strapped for cash, and spend all our money on fuel bills, mortgages and shiny discs, lol.
Hope that helps mate.

I can only speak for myself. Sadly, if I bailed out of prior commitents now, it would screw up other people's plans for them. Simple reason but inescapable. Whether it's free or not is irrelevant to me, although distance is a factor (Stourbridge is 3 hours plus from me, the NFT is under 60 mins). If you can ditch other plans just like that, you're very lucky. We can't all do that. On a separate subject not related to getting to the gig though, are the NFTVA taking a preservation copy of these, Chris? Just eager for them to be preserved for posterity as they're an important piece of TV history.

Hi Laurence
The NFTVA have expressed no interest in wanting a copy at the moment. We are happy to oblige should they ask.

Poo again I'm downunder and can't attend.. why not provide some clips on a Youtube style channel. or make up a Archive Invite only torrent site.. have it on Donate only.. so you could get some coppers for the sterling work you do and us (people who arn't in the same country) could see this stuff.

My friend is a lovely man, a great guy and clearly knows how cheap the round will be, since I drink tea all through the events lol.

Slightly off topic but is their a reason the caretakers of the ABC back catologue allowed series three of Callan to be described on DVD as series one? I know some episodes are missing but it gives them very little room for manoeuvre should any they make any future release of their own.

I'd be very surprised if they had to give their approval to something like that. I think it's more likely Umbrella wanted to give the average punter the impression they were getting it all rather than just the Thames instalments...

I haven't seen those old Callan series 3 DVD releases for a while but seem to think they may have got around it by saying something carefully worded on there somewhere though like "first colour series" or similar (not certain of this though). They don't have to acknowledge the ABC episodes in any way though (though, to me, what they're saying is factually wrong in a trade descriptions act type of way if they are calling it the "first series"!)
I dearly wish a box set of all the surviving episodes would come out though...

I was actually looking to see whether the early 'Callan' episodes were available on DVD which why I spotted the sleight of hand with series three. Whoever owns the ABC back catologue should bring out a boxset of remaining episodes from various series packaged similar to the ITC set possibly described as the 'The Best of ABC'. I'd certainly buy it.
