Crikey!
It does make you wonder how things have got so bad with regards preserving some of these childrens shows - I seem to remember an episode of Runaround with Carry On Star Charles Hawtrey making a guest appearance, I think he came on in some contraption that resembled Little Nelly from You Only Live Twice, god knows why and apologies if I'm confusing it with another show - maybe someone else remembers it?
I also read somewhere that a similar fate had also hit the TV Series Whiz Kids which starred Kenneth Williams and Arthur Mullard and that the tapes had started to deteriorate. Maybe in such cases fans may have videoed them and still have them languishing in a box at home...

I've seen a few Runaround eps 1xCrowther, 4xMike Reid (Sept 79, Horror Special, Seaside Special, Techno Special with Metal Mickey) plus there is one available for download if you know where to look - Christmas 1980 with Mike Reid.

The picture on How is not totally clear but there are 5 bays worth of How 2" videotapes stored by ITV, I reckon that's about 200 shows. Now they only have a few labels with VTR numbers, the majority just say How and nothing else. Since no copyright holder wants to pay for any 2" transfers AND they wont let us pay for them or indeed buy any viewing copies due to a legal wrangle, I guess we may never know if that is all the shows, or perhaps they are all the same episode on 200 different tapes, lol. There are 7 on digibeta but no tx dates, just VTR numbers on the clocks. I've never counted the number of eps made so I dont know if 200 is a good survival rate or not? Hope that helps. Chris It does help indeed, thanks very much for the info, Chris. Very tantalising that so many remain (200 seems a pretty fair number to me), but also frustrating that they are stuck in a rights limbo, and crying out for transfer. Still, at least they are there, so perhaps one day they'll get some TLC...a very optimistic thought, I know.

Charles Hawtrey does appear on the Runaround Horror Special (as does Roger Ruskin Spear of the Bonzos, which is a fine thing) ,but there's no Little Nelly like contraption involved. Maybe he appeared more than once, I like the idea of him coming in a Little Nelly.

RUNAROUND
Just for your interest people, these are the mystery Runaround 2" tapes that ITV hold that have no tx dates or other info apart from what's on the label - shown in speech marks.
"Series 11 Show 8" "Series 12 Show 1" "Programme 3 Dubbed From UM" "Programme 5 Dubbed From UM" "Christmas Runaround" "Prog 1" "Prog 4" "Prog 5" "Series 10 Prog 10" "Prog 3" "Prog 2" "Prog 13" "Prog 11" "Prog 12" "Prog 6" "Prog 13" vtr 3249 vtr837E vtr818E
Hope that's of interest to you.
All of these were housed in Southampton orginally and some were dubbed off then by ITV staff and have since circulated, but those transfers were unofficial and not kept by ITV in broadcast format by an archive. If the people who made those transfers still have the BetaSP tapes they used then the new Ruanround copyright holder would like them.
