What a shame, sorry guys. Though I havent actually seen either of these, but I think Arthur Lowe did one and I wouldnt have minded seeing that one too. I think Z Cars is a bit of a lost opportunity though because there are certain eras that could have cherrypicked with an example, perhaps over five nights. And no sign of Softly, Softly, perhaps one of the first successful spin off shows from any British TV series... Still I suppose its cheaper for them to repeat 8 episodes of Life On Mars and boost the DVD sales... The Arthur Lowe episode was "Handle With Care" which was on the official BBC video alongside "Four Of A Kind" and "Friday Night". Great episode with Arthur in fine form. It just never fails to amaze me that though the BBC have a couple of hundred episodes to choose from it's always the same handful that get favoured... most notably "Four Of A Kind" and "Happy Families". What bothers me about these lousy choices of repeats is that BBC4 may turn round and say they got low viewing figures so it's not really worth taking the time to dig out anything else., failing to realise that those of us who like vintage TV get fed up of being fobbed off with the same episodes time and again. It always annoys me too how it's virtually always the 1962 to 1964 era that gets preference. The idea of cherry picking examples from each era would be lovely... pairs from 1967, 1969, 1970 and 1972 would be welcome as would random episodes from 1973 onwards. According to the missing episodes list in the main part of this site, absolutely NOTHING remains of "Softly Softly". However much of "Softly Softly Taskforce" does exist and save for a handful of episodes repeated in the mid 90s on UK Gold, it has been all but ignored ever since which is a shame because the three or four episodes I did catch of it were very enjoyable.

Thanks for the info there Peter, I'll have to look out for a copy of the video as its certainly one i want to see.
Thats pretty sad about Softly, Softly though an episode of Taskforce probably wouldnt go amiss...

According to the missing episodes list in the main part of this site, absolutely NOTHING remains of "Softly Softly". That's not strictly true, it's just that unlike some of the missing episode lists, the "Softly Softly" one only lists missing episodes, it doesn't show the existing ones where they fall in the running order. So from series one "It Doesn't Grown On Trees" and "A - Z" , from series two "Sleeping Dogs" and "Find The Lady", and from series three "The Hunt", "Measure of Tolerance", "Landing Whispers" and "Unfinished Business" all survive - TTBOMK. 22 out of 27 of series four also exist, though of the 10 series five episodes (before the name change) only 3 exist.

Thanks Simon, I'm pleased to hear that. I also recall on an episode of Sounds of The Sixties theres an announcement for Softly Softly following Top Of The pops. Its a shame theres been no episode of this picked for the BBC4 season, again its one I would love to see again, along with Z Cars and Dixon and seriously long overdue releases on DVD

Do any episodes exist of Softly,Softly from 1971 as in the Autumn of that year the school i was attending took our class to Wood Lane to visit the BBC and it was being rehearsed at the time.

Yes, they do. I believe that all episodes of Softly Softly: Task Force (the name change occurred in November 1969) currently exist.
