While looking at the Times newspaper archive, which has recently become available, I noticed that the Apollo 9 launch took place while "Blue Peter" was on the air in 1969, and they crossed to James Burke and Patrick Moore for the live coverage.
As all episodes of "Blue Peter" exist, as I understand, from 1965 onwards (think I'm right about that), wouldn't the Apollo coverage have been saved as part of the overall programme? If not, then surely one could say that the "Blue Peter" programme in question is not actually complete!

Thats a good question! AFAIK all editions from 1967 onwards were archived and have survived (excepting Christopher Trace's final show for some peculiar reason) so the Apollo coverage should be there in some form or other. It is the same time frame and era as the infamous Lulu the Elephant escapade!

Okay, I gots to asks:
Lulu the Elephant? For those of us over in America (when I first heard the title of the program I thought it was some sort of Benny Hill-esque comedy program about a cold extremity) could you give a quick description of why the incident was infamous? And what the incident was?

In a nutshell:
Lulu, elephant who was a bit strong-willed - producer said may look a bit cruel if handler came on with necessary stick to control said elephant - elephant therefore runs wild, does business on floor, handler slips and slides - literally in the sh** - is dragged off-camera by Lulu, looking furious (the handler, that is - I'm sure Lulu was really enjoying herself).
One laughing, but slightly embarrassed-looking team of presenters sign off.

Lulu the Elephant? One of the classic British TV blunders. To put into context... it was the final show of the series before the summer break. The Blue Peter team were going to Ceylon and to "set the scene", they brought in a baby elephant called Lulu onto the show. The elephant had a mind of it's own and this is what happened... www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_Cj2TtFd_EInterestingly, at this time Blue Peter was being pre-recorded... it was usually (and still is) live but at that time due to lack of studios or something, they were forced into pre-taping shows. Producer Biddy Baxter thought the elephant business was so funny she chose to leave it in the finished show uncut and since then, it's become a legendary clip that's been shown many times. Hope this explains it a little!
