Just been going through the website of the Australian Government Archives looking up various tv shows and I found this entry regarding a censored clip from the Reg Varney series Beggar My Neighbour. naa12.naa.gov.au/scripts/ItemDetail.asp?M=0&B=8415006According to Lost UK TV Shows ( www.lostshows.com/default.aspx?programme=5a5c2ad7-91e8-4331-93ad-61921c7468d1), a fair whack of this show is missing, but I'm unsure as to whether this censored clip (20 secs) is from a missing ep. The entry gives the title as "Laying Down the Law", but the guides I've seen only give episode titles to Season Three episodes only. Does anyone know if that episode "title" rings a bell?

I don't have the episode listing to hand but i'd say there's a better than even chance it's from a missing one as there are quite a lot of episodes wiped from this series. Andrew Martin of the BBC will probably be able to say more if he's reading this.

23 episodes were made including the Comedy Playhouse pilot, but only 7 survive - however "Laying Down the Law" (tx'd 23/7/67) is one that does survive. They all seem to have episode titles, at least those ones that survive do:
13/03/67 Have Car Won't Travel (Comedy Choice version) 02/07/67 Let 'Em Eat Cake 09/07/67 A Host of Friends 16/07/67 No Bed of Rose's 23/07/67 Laying Down the Law 30/07/67 My Fair Harry Butt 06/08/67 For Better or Worse
The first of these episodes is the first of series 1, the others make up the whole of series 2, there are no series 3 episodes surviving.

Id like to see a DVD release of this series as i only recall one where they sunbathed in the garden and told the neighbours they had been on holiday.

Thats the episode that sticks in my mind too Stephen. I remember striped deckchairs and them being asked questions about their holiday destination and giving ridiculous answers. Other than that, I only vaguely remember an episode where they were invited for dinner and made fools of theirselves. Using a fishknife for buttering his bun, that sort of thing. There have been a lot of series a lot worse than that one on the box. Eric.

Okay, thanks for the clarification. It occurred to me to check the Australian Archives as this is where a bunch of Doctor Who censor clips were found. The archives also lists some press items relating to Z-Cars and the first season of the Avengers!

It's the episode that I recall too. Didn't Harry Butt (Reg Varney) pinch some produce from Gerald Garvey's (Peter Jones) garden whilst being watched through a chink in the curtains by Mr Garvey, later blaming the boy scouts? I used to really enjoy this series - there must be a market for a release of the surviving episodes Nick

The theme was catchy too sounded a bit like Greenlight -The American Breed from 1968.
