Saw series 2, 3, and 4 of "It Ain't Half Hot Mum" at the local shop. Although 4 doesn't have it, there is a notice in very small print on the back of the series 2 and 3 boxes stating that the episodes have been edited for "contractual reasons". Anyone have any idea what has been altered? I wouldn't have thought IAHHM would have music rights issues. (I'm in Region 4 if that matters.)

I'm no 'IAHHM' expert, but 'contractual reasons' usually refers to copyright material not owned by the BBC. It could be songs or visual material. The 'Grange Hill' DVDs have suffered from music-related edits and the DVD version of 'Artemis 81' had to be cut to remove stills from 'Vertigo'. In the case of 'IAHHM', perhaps some of the concert party songs couldn't be cleared for home video use.

I cannot stand this series so cannot confirm anything but given that it had a high musical content, as dobrien suggested above, it's very likely to be musical clearance issues... maybe a song played during a scene or a song performed in the show that is still in copyright. The "Grange Hill" DVD cuts were appalling and senseless (never mind the filmising of the episodes) and it's fair to say there can be no future series released because of the increasing use of current pop songs heard on radios etc. The infamous Series 9 - the Zammo on smack saga - would be a logistical nightmare to clear thanks to vital scenes set in an amusement arcade where the "Star Wars" video game is prominent on the soundtrack...
So, it's very probably a music clearance issue.

Think DVD releases of Hi-De-Hi have similar issues. Funnily enough some Dad's Army video releases back in the 90s suffered as a result of clearance issues but these have been sorted out on DVD
