I was watching the 1970 FA Cup 6th Round game between Watford and Liverpool a few weeks ago on ESPN Classic and it was shown in black and white. Didn't think too much of it at the time until a few weeks later I was browsing through You Tube and found this www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xBKELJeMTANow the question is does the BBC have the original highlights of this match in colour in their archives, and if so, why did they hand over a black and white copy to ESPN Classic.

Sometimes on old tapes the colour signal can become unstable, in the form of flashing or flicker to a point of irritation, especially in fast moving action . So the cheapest method is just to switch it off. Whereas a bit spent on a restoration should recover it.
Not saying that is the actual reason but it could be.

I just wondered. I remember watching games that were shown in colour on Match of the Seventies, then shown in Black and White on Bobby Charlton's Football Scrapbook, which seems really weird considering it was from the same archives.

I noticed during ESPN's Classic Season programme for Leeds United 1973-74 the lead up to goals was extended by at least a minute compared to the clips shown on 'Match of the Seventies'. I maybe wrong but I think colour videotape copies were only kept for high scoring games or games of significence while the highlights (except goals) were stored in black and white in the BBC archive. During 'Match of the Seventies' the clip of when Wyn Davies (Manchester City) headbutting Larry Lloyd (Liverpool), the first time television was used for disipline matters, was only available in black and white but tinted red to blend in.

It is a very bad tint they did, unless they wanted to point out the headbutt better. I just watched that moment on You Tube www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1zZGH43XdE and although the quality is not great, it just looks awful.

The other black and white clip I forgot to mention I've seen recently was a brief section at the end of Colchester's giantkilling of Leeds United in 1971. This included the final whistle and the players celebrating post match. I think everybody's probably seen the goals available in colour. Has anybody even got a list of matches the BBC has in colour shown on Match of the Day from between 1969-1973?

Not particularly a football fan, but wasn't it Hereford United, and the winning goal scored by a bloke named Radford?
Colin.

Great era for football. That was some goal, You are correct, it was Ronnie Radford who scored it on a mudbath of a pitch. The match was actually Newcastle and Hereford in the F A Cup. The Colchester v Leeds game was a totally different matter. Heres Ronnies goal again. youtube.com/watch?v=vHZWyMFgM80
