Looks like it's probably home movies... Not likely to have any missing TV...

Agreed. But then, we know some people pointed cine cameras as their tellies in the 60s. Otherwise we wouldn't have that great clip of the Doctor saying goodbye to Stephen, and so on.

You really are clutching at straws.... Do you realize how many Billions (yes, Billions) of feet of movie film are out there?

Having said that though - some home movies have produced some gold in the past. Just the thing to look at when compiling footage for docos, decade (fifties, sixties) retrospectives and the like...
I really hate to see *any* old footage go west. I've heard some horror stories in the past (as have many here, I guess) about old film collections being thrown out in the rubbish when some obscure relative dies - and only for the, rather dubious, reasoning that the surviving family themselves have no playback facilities!
I have a friend of mine that regularly attends estate sales and the like to see if things like this are on the way out. It sounds ghoulish, I know, but he has saved a lot of historically interesting footage this way (and that has subsequently made it into documentaries). In a curious twist of chance one of them, a speedway motor race (near Nelson, NZ) around 1965, even features him with a group of friends watching from a sand dune - an extremely profound moment for him when he discovered this...

It wouldn't hurt to ask this fellow a question, if any of these films are of TV programmes or merely home movies ... and if they are, maybe you can get him to spool some of these out and see what they are. You never know what might be in there ... Tenth Planet 4? Dalek masterplan 4? Mission to the Unknown? Even if it's an old episode of Dad's Army or Z Cars, it's still maybe worth looking into.

Given that these cine films are specified as coming from the 1950s, it's highly unlikely! Richard

There is always the possibility that there could be some missing television on 8mm cine.
My dad made cine films from 1962 to about 1983 - one of them does actually feature about 15 seconds of some show on an old black and white tv. I also picked some cine films up a my local market for £1 a couple of years ago - there was about 10 or so seconds of an old tv show on that one - although I think that one was in colour - the dick emery show, if memory serves.
So really, it is not beyond reason to think that more clips could be found this way. In some ways it would make the clip more interesting if you could see other people watching the show - (even if the image of the tv was skewed and not straight on) contextualises it within the time of its original broadcast.
At any rate, old holiday cines etc... if nothing else, can be fascinating viewing.

In the past there have been clips of Dr Who discovered on 8mm cine film. Some of these clips can be seen on the Lost in Time boxset. I think this is another area worth investigating. I collect old 8mm cine film myself as I find the old footage quite fascinating. A dual format (std/spr) projector can be purchased reasonably cheaply and there is always a lot of old footage for sale on ebay or elsewhere. In the past few years I have picked up 2 400ft reel at my local market in Belfast at the staggering price of £1/reel. One of the reels was particularly interesting with footage in London around 1964/5 - including old red double-decker London buses and images of the front of a West End cinema premiering The Sound of Music. Another reel I purchased features a short clip of a BBC comedy show from the 70s. My dad bought a cine camera in 1962 and filmed up until about 1983. Total of about 30 film reels - I transferred these reels to DVD a few years ago; my parents wedding, Christenings, birthdays, "first holy communions", holidays etc.. etc... One of the reels does feature a 15 second black and white movie clip filmed off the tv. I was thinking about the possibility of footage existing on 8mm and decided to contact the companies and private individuals who transfer 8mm to digital/DVD/vhs for a living. I sent out some messages and so far have received four responses. 3 of these reponses are from major companies who make their livelihood in this line of work; This reply is particularly encouraging: This reply came from one of the leading cine to dvd transfer companies in the UK: This reply came from a company that advertises on ebay: Another interesting reply. This company provided a fantastic link to their online archive with streamed cine/tv footage from the 70s. More links below if you want to watch the footage. I searched their archive and found the following 8mm cine clips all filmed off a tv screen. You can watch the clips online; Old television clip - a Beach Boys concert, followed by some Star Trek and then a short tv commercial: www.homemoviedepot.com/archive/view/wecoyle/246294.htmlKid on tv show: www.homemoviedepot.com/archive/view/ctham128/227379.htmlKirby Scott TV show: www.homemoviedepot.com/archive/view/lewthedrummer/305303.htmlBrief clip of Elvis: www.homemoviedepot.com/archive/view/peeweern1/234870.htmlWar of the Worlds. + other stuff; www.homemoviedepot.com/archive/view/dotmpp/227450.htmlThis one features a clip of a tv broadcast on the 1960 Democrat Convention- clip is in the middle of the movie; www.homemoviedepot.com/archive/view/roginsk/257725.htmlAnother example of tv/cine filming: www.homemoviedepot.com/archive/view/dvmemoriesvideo/250955.htmlIt is quite possible there are clips of missing Dr Who on 8mm cine film - a lot of people used cine cameras in the 60's. Realistically though, the odds of finding any of these clips are not exactly high. Nevertheless, its always worth a try. Who knows? We could get lucky. Another site worth checking out for old 8mm cine film footage available as .WMV or quicktime streaming. Uk based. www.alivestudios-memories.co.uk/movievault.htmlSuperb footage /very interesting with music soundtracks. From their website,

This avenue of research, can very well turn up some amazing material. However tracking down material that was recorded of a TV set 40 + years ago, can be a task indeed. I am still very interested in that 8mm pic of Wheel in Space episode 4. I hope Richard can track down that elusive Mr.Dean who published the story back in the late 1960's.
I also believe that possibly transfer companies could be a avenue of research. However this will probably not be very likely as these companies are private and make these transfers for private use of the customer. They are under strict confidences when it comes to confidentiality of information. What might be a step in the right direction is if the BBC or BFI for example sent out a plea to these transfer companies for the amnesty policy for lost UK TV clips or material. However, this avenue of recovery is a looooooong shot. Online auctions and websites would probably be a good place to start looking for old 8mm home recordings. Also local classifieds can unearth some real treasures. After all, that is how Wheel In Space ep 3 was recovered !
Cheers, Lance.

Some really interesting responses, especially all of the above from Brian Wilson – good stuff! I think if people are having their cine transferred and it DOES happen to include something we'd love to see and get disseminated, chances are they would be only to happy to let it out IF they were aware of the interest. This confdentiality issue is largely irrelevant outside of films of family occasions (which no-one else would want to see anyway). And frankly, there's a whiff of self-importance about it on the part of one transfer company representative quoted (is there a Hippocratic oath for image technicians? I suspect not). Surely the important thing is for these transfer companies to have a message in their communications to the effect that others may be interested in customers' footage if it's of possibly lost TV/ film. The popularity of home-movie TV shows and websites such as YouTube shows that when people are given the chance, they may well let others enjoy. Here's a rare(?) Tom Baker interview I found: www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2soLlwnu8w&NR

I guess I'm in a minority -- a few seconds of bad quality 8mm shot-off-tv film clips doesn't excite me at all.

Hi somthing on ebay maybe of interest not cine film but reel to reel video tape could be interesting if it dates from the 1960's,label says 'people,dr who 'the person bidding also bought another reel to reel tape this month from the same seller with parkinson,Sellers,Milligan,Seecoube apperently on it so maybe dates this one to the early seventies possibly earlier, im not an expert on tapes, but obviously the guy must have been happy enough with previous one he bought to bid on this one, like i said could be of interest. cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=160079657513&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=006
