Would you believe I recently saw these on an obscure non-British DVD label. You description is correct.,. though he isn't very furry. He lives in a hole underneath a Communist utopia. They are all in Sovcolor or whatever, with tarnished reds and grubby greens. The big surprise is that there were few of these and they were made years apart stretching back into the 50s.
Shown at a time when the BBC would throw any old foreign cast offs at unsuspecting viewers. You'll remember the often plummy English recaps at the star of the b/w serials. One of these; 'The Steel City', had an improbably complex plot about spies and a secret factory. All of the equipment looked like it had been stolen from a George Melies film. Full of cracking plot twists 'Petrov has stolen the plans from Svetlana'.
Foreign pinching extended to cartoons, such as the blob family - 'Barbrapapa'. Pedants beware, I don't know how to spell 'Barbarapad'...f*ck, but you get the idea! CBBC was much simpler then. Even Johnny Morris used to sing on Animal Magic........

There's at least twelve DVDs of The Mole in the Czech Rep - Krtvova Dobrodruzstvi (Mole's Adventures) in their strange language. Each DVD contains 10/12 episodes, and, at least on my volume, there's an interview with the creator, Zdenek Miler. The shows are basically silent with Mr Bean-like noises, but the interview is sub'd in umpteen languages, as are menu screens and whathaveyou. Nice restored copies too! The Mole is quite a part of Czech culture - if you go to Prague you'll see him and his pals everywhere!
