I am new to the world of Recons, are they reliable to give us a good look at what the episode might look like? Also, which are the best recons, Loose Canon look good, really want to see Fury from the Deep.

A friend gave me a tape of a reconstructed story and it was ok, but one part of it made me cringe - they'd added a moving mouth onto the stills, a la Rory Bremner. It was horrible. The mouth often didn't match the angle of the photograph, plus they'd also added moving eyes! It was really freaky and disturbing to watch, and I couldn't watch more than a few minutes without turning it off, which was a shame because the rest of it was well done, incorporating the few frames of off screen shot footage etc... Maybe it was a spoof on the whole reconstructions thing?
I know it's proper etiquette to be polite to people on forums but if the people responsible for the moving eyes/mouth are reading I'd just like to give them a virtual slap around the head with a wet fish!

even the mental image of what you described is utterly terrifying! I kinda want to watch it now to scare myself silly! Must've looked like the Children of the Damned..

Which story was it from and I will know to avoid it! I can't remember, I taped over it. As long as it hasn't got moving eyes and mouth superimposed onto the stills you should be safe.

Which story was it from and I will know to avoid it! It was Harold Achatz' recon of The Nightmare Begins. But it was a one-off done nearly ten years ago. I really wouldn't judge Doctor Who reconstructions by that one! Richard

I am new to the world of Recons, are they reliable to give us a good look at what the episode might look like? I think reconstructions that use the audio (combined from various sources), and existing clips, telesnaps and other 'authentic pictures' such as taken during the recording but at a different angle from the camera would be an accurate way to reconstruct a missing episode. Where reconstructions may go too far is in the use of pictures and composite pictures from other sources (i.e. other episodes), and specially created material. As an example, the first two pictures on the Outpost Gallifrey 'Mission To The Unknown' episode guide, www.gallifreyone.com/episode.php?id=ta , are not images from the episode but pictures from the Loose Canon reconstruction representing the originals, and it would be better not to use them. Such a reconstruction might not look very conventional when there are only a few epsiode images available, but at least they would all be original.

The loose cannon recons are simply stunning and put the bbc tenth planet vhs reconstruction to shame.
Loose cannon rocks, at times you feel like you are watching the real thing.

The recons work well generally, though in my opinion there is one real determining factor as to how watchable one is, and that is picture quality. My first two recons were not Loose Cannon, and were the Highlanders and the Smugglers. Both were so washed out that it was hard to follow them.
Now, recent LC stuff like Fury from the Deep is a different story altogether. A nice clear picture and the occasional animated frame really does do an excellent job of giving you an idea what the episode looked like.
