Just out of interest, does anyone know how many 16mm copies of Hartnell / Troughton episodes are held by private collectors?
Also which episode is know to exist with the most copies and what is the largest private collection known? (I am not asking for names or anything, just figures ;D) Is there some one out there going for the set?

I gather they're quite hard to come by. I can only ever recall seeing The Invasion 6 and The Wheel in Space 6 for sale from the black and white era, but I've never really looked for existing episodes save for those that only survive edited.

I gather they're quite hard to come by. They're not *that* difficult - there have been at least six different episodes the the last couple of years on eBay alone. However, if you're talking about genuine BBC Enterprises prints and not the mass that were pirated in the 1980's, then the number does drop down a little! Richard

Ben: I think the one you saw was Wheel 3 -- I've never heard of any prints of Wheel (6) on 16mm. If I'm not mistaken, the BBCs copy is 35mm..
The half dozen or so titles that were duped in the '80s turn up from time to time - the ones I know about are Invasion (6), Wheel (3), Evil (2), Chase (6), Dalek Invasion (5), and Web of Fear (1) .
Richard: compared to other 16mm TV shows, Dr. Whos are massively rare - even the dupes are relatively uncommon, but real BBC prints are extremely hard to find. Take a popular american show like Star Trek, there are probably at least 50 copies of each episode in private hands. With Dr. Who (original prints), I suspect you could count the # of prints of each episode on one hand (or in some cases one one finger -- or none at all).
The largest private collection that I'm aware of has about 100 episodes... Not sure if there are any bigger collections...

If it was pirated, then it probably was Episode Three [of The Wheel in Space]. I assumed it was Episode Six because "Three" was the recovered episode, so didn't imagine there would be m/any duplicates in circulation. Much like you wouldn't expect a redudant Day of Armageddon to turn up.

Actually contrary to what you might think, there are often more copies of recovered episodes than some of the others -- I know of at least a few cases where the person who receovered the episode got back his original, plus an extra copy when he loaned the print to the BBC. But I suspect that you are right about "Day of Armageddon"... :-(

I have had previous dealings with this individual in the past, he has a huge collection of who material, when we last conversed. I believe he also had some missing film segments from the troughton story " The Dominators" in his possesion, that the BBC does not posess in thier archive. I have sent him an e-mail of late, but no response has yet been recived by me. Does anyone else have any info or input? If so please leave me a response.
Thanks,Lance.

The Dominators is complete and unedited as of 1996 - an unedited Episode 5 was recovered in 1994 and the censor clips recovered in 1996 featured the missing footage from Episode 4, although they haven't been merged into the 16mm telerecording for some reason. The only remaining edited episodes are Checkmate (The Time Meddler 4), The Final Test (The Celestial Toymaker 4), The War Machines 3 and The War Machines 4. The Invasion 6 is also possibly edited, but it seems unlikely.

Wouldn't surprise me if it was him that returned the unedited Dominators 5. He's certainly returned other missing material (not DW), and frequents this very forum.

Since he frequents this very forum, could it be possible for someone in authority to contact him on the subject of missing material returning to the BBC? Just a thought, if anyone else has any info or input, please feel free to leave a response.
Thanks,Lance.

If he visits this message board, then he probably knows what's missing and, as he's returned missing material in the past, it seems unlikely that he would have any now.

The Dominators (5) episode was loaned to the BBC by it's previous owner (before Mr. Sigel).
But I can tell you for a fact that a) he doesn't have any missing episodes, and b) he would happily lend the BBC anything they need to borrow.
