Well, while doing research for my recent article re: the '92 return of "Tomb of the Cybermen" to the BBC from Hong Kong (link provided below), it became clear that Hong Kong has been uncooperative in the past regarding official BBC inquiries (which means they are likely to give *you* the same reply they gave me in '99 when I mailed them an inquiry - "We have nothing!") and apparently their print records perished in a fire some years back and so they didn't know -when "Tomb" was returned - exactly what they had, and still don't know for sure today what they have! Perhaps they do have missing material, but are they even aware of it? And do they care? I'd like to know where episodes 2-6 of "The Web of Fear" ended up, since Hong Kong only returned part 1 in the late 70's? And I recently saw (thanks to Google Groups) a '92 post on rec.arts.drwho by Chris Whitehead claiming that, "The return of Tomb last month has prompted a search of 10 other Asian stations which purchased Doctor Who between '63-'67 and unbelievably more episodes have been found at the next station contacted, sometime in the first week of February. Which episodes these are is not known at present, but is believed to include some of Fury From the Deep and Wheel in Space." Now, obviously the above account never materialized, and I have been unable to track down Chris Whitehead to ask him who his 'sources' were, so I can't say for sure whether other Asian stations were in fact contacted (although it seems likely that Archive Selector Adam Lee would have thought to do this) and who knows whether those stations would have responded. The passage of time and geographical distance have made this one tricky to track down... All the best, Mark Parmerter Doctor Who Gateway to missing episodes, www.geocities.com/markles2000/index.html

Or, did they in fact return all six episodes..? It's quite feasible that the other five might have been destroyed a few days before Mr Levine turned up... Of course if there's documentation that says they did only send back episode 1, I'll get me coat!

why are Hong Kong being uncooperative? is it just the bbc they have a problem with or do they consider the rather difficult task of combing their archives not worth the hassle? and on the off chance that they do have more stuff what (of interest to us) are they likley to have coats standing by

Of course it's not worth the hassle!! Think about it in terms of the BBC's archive - over 1½ million items on miles and miles and miles of shelving with over 75,000 new items being added each year. Imagine if someone called up and asked about something that you *might* still have from 30 years ago, which no longer turns up on your internal index. Are you really going to waste your time attempting to plough through thousands and thousands of items when it's of no possible benefit to you?

Add to the fact that they probablly get asked about 'Missing Dr Who' on quite a regular basis then I can see why they would start to become rather 'un-cooperative'
Give it time though, and I guess that at some point in future time, some informed person will one day open an old cupboard at he back of Hong Kongs archive and discover a complete set of 60's TOTP, Dr Who's etc..etc.. :-)
(and anyway, if this Dr Who timelord fella is so good, why doesn't he go back in time to 1970 and sneak away all exisiting episodes from the BBC...or perhaps he has done that already leaving us in the state we are)

Now, obviously the above account never materialized, and I have been unable to track down Chris Whitehead to ask him who his 'sources' were Well here I am. Blimey, that's a blast from the past seeing that old post dug up, I thought internet stuff from back then was as lost as the very episodes we're all here for. Anyway, looking back it appears I got caught up in post-Tomb discovery excitement and was probably just passing on a hoax. I do remember being in the computer lab at Manchester Uni, and I definately remember typing it in from something printed in front of me. I used to buy everything and anything DW related from the Odyssey 7 shop next to our building, and I'm fairly sure it was something I bought there, but memory cheats and if this was the case I'm sure this rumour would have been more common knowledge. But thanks for the nostalgia trip.... spending all my time in the lab posting on r.a.dw when I should have been preparing for my finals!
