Is it true that when the BBC burned episodes, they burned them rangonely and did not know what was in untill 1978?

Well, records were made of which episodes were destroyed at any given time - so they obviously knew which episodes they were destroying - but it wasn't until 1978 that all the existing paperwork was examined to get an overview of what was destroyed.
However, the order does seem a little strange - almost all Troughton DW was destroyed by 1978 but a large proportion of Hartnell still existed.

Possibly the employees who were involved in destroying the episodes had an preference for Hartnell episodes rather than Troughton episodes, (just kidding of course ).
AND THE SEARCH CONTINUES !

Any chance there might be a stray episode still remaining down there? Perhaps hidden away in some forgotten part of a young prince's casbah? Mabye in the back of some forsaken cafe in Casablanca? Behind the old piano? (Sorry, I got carried away)

Mabye in the back of some forsaken cafe in Casablanca? Behind the old piano? My own geography is bad, but isn't Casablanca in Morocco?

From what I recall, the vast majority of the Hartnell episodes (mostly from the first two season) were found in an old BBC Enterprises vault, or in Enterprises somewhere. Presumably, these were unsold sales prints, but why there be the odd gap of a story or episodes, is anybody guess. But strangely, that always appears to be the case. Oh and hi all.

ISTR it being said that the Hartnells in the Enterprises vault tallied with the list of stories that Mexico bought, and that they were being kept there until their contract to broadcast them ran out in case they needed to be sent a duplicate print in the event of damage.

could the same tyhing of happened with the Troughton episodes somewhere? Could they be sitting in a foreign television vault somewhere? But I fear that this is highly unlikely

I sincerely doubt that the BBC will physically view the contents of every single tin of film that they posess. So unless there is another fluke ( The Space Pirates inserts found in the Dad's Army can ) then this method of episode recovery is pointless, if it will never happen then why dont we just move on to another worthwhile subject.
Thanks,Lance.
