Hey out there is there any new news about that rumored find of Roof of the World in New Zealand? Or is it just another episode hungry fan creating episode rumors on the internet? I have an idea of how fans in europe might be able to find a few episodes of Doctor Who. Schools in the 60's showed 16mm films and tv episodes to the kids to keep them occupied at times, Neil Lambess said that his old New Zealand school had an episode of the Avengers. It is safe to asume if one school has an episode of a BBC television series other schools might be hoarding some episodes of Doctor Who that they might have forgotten all about. I propose that Doctor Who fans in New Zealand contact the board of schools in New Zealand and arrange a school wide search through thier film collections. Not such a far fatched idea as others that I have heard. Or even for someone to post an article in the New Zealand Herald about looking for Doctor Who episodes and 16mm film, that might work too. What do you think?

I had thought of that too. But then I figured out that Australian and New Zealand school would have switched over to using video tape along time ago. The films probably ended up like those in the BBC archives...trashed. Of course, there is an alternative search idea. Mabye some of the Australian/ NZ posters could get in touch with their old teachers to see if they (for and by whatever reason) had any films used in the schools. Even if nothing was found. You both would probably get something out of it just by getting in touch with them, and telling them how importaint of a role they played in your life. I'm sure the teachers would enjoy that a lot in their golden years.

It is known that many schools in NZ hired films from distribution sources such as 16mm Ltd, who provided documentaries and cinematic releases for screenings.
In all the years I spent at school I never saw Doctor Who - or any other TV show - screened in class.
Neil Lambess is a year older than me, so we are of the same generation. What Neil saw at his school might have been an isolated occurance - certainly it is unlikely that schools held material that was not of an eductional nature (although I suppose Doctor Who historicals might fall under the educational banner).
The Avengers episode in question - MIsion Highly Improbable - was junked by the NZBC in 1975 - the same junking that included The Lion. I would suggest that the Avengers episode found its way into the hands of the teacher at school who screened it for the children (although it was a "Y" rated production deemed not suitable for children under 13!)
It's highly unlikley that 30 years later schools would still hold 16mm films - everything would be on video or DVD...
I sometimes wish I'd known about the possibility of missing episodes in NZ when I was still at school in the early 1980s as I might have been able to proactively do something about checking what schools had!

There is a large Doctor Who fan club in New Zealand I believe. Maybe someone should get in touch with them to see if they can contact a local school board or call up some schoold that might have some old reels of film sitting in a broom closet covered in an inch of dust. If more fans actively got on the horn thinking of new and plausable ways of finding episodes, we might actually find one or two somewhere down the line. So what do you guys thingk about finding people in New Zealand who can make a few calls?

in my experience the schools in NZ who held ex NZBC stuff in their AV collections also had a teacher in charge of !6mm equipment who was also a 16mm film buff/collector
So i dont think the films were ever "officially" part of the schools resources, more parts of the privates collections of the Teachers involved in the AV dept
ONE area that ive always thought is untapped is the amount of people over here running small home businesses transfering 16mm to VHS.... i wonder how many collectors in the mid eighties had film prints transferred to VHS?
