I was just wondering, we don't hear much in regards to the missing colour footage. What was the last colour footage recovery? Have there been any rumours lately regarding the possible existance/recovery of any missing colour footage? I understand that there's a common mistake in regards to Invasion of the Dinosaurs: Part 1 (perhaps something to do with it being sold as a five-part story overseas?).
What actually are the chances of missing colour footage still existing? I'd assume that that there would be a greater chance of colour footage surviving over black and white footage because video cassette recorders were more common than in the late sixties (re: The Space Pirates: Episode 2). However, at the same time, how many people even realise that colour footage is missing?
Basically, I'm just wondering if there have ever been any interesting rumours regarding colour footage and how well the missing colour footage was sold overseas and indeed how likely it is that it could exist in the UK.

A better bet is more likely to be re-colouring the episodes by computer - it looks like just a matter of time before the technology allows this to be done both cheaply and convincingly.
As for a new set of off-air tapes turning up, well, even if any exist, they may well not offer up a picture any more - remember the moon landing footage, from the same find as the off-air Space Pirates 2, couldn't be salvaged except for the audio.
We may get lucky, but artificial recolourisation will almost certainly arrive soon if not.

Thanks for the reply.
I agree with you about re-colourisations being almost inevitable, especially now that stories are being released on DVD. I'm not certain about The Mind of Evil though because the entire story exists only in black and white and it could be reasonably released in black and white without confusing viewers as to why episodes keep reverting from colour to black and white. (I know that sentence is a bit confused, but I'm sure you know what I'm trying to say.)

What was the last colour footage recovery? The Tom Lundy footage ( The Silurians, The Ambassadors of Death, Terror of the Autons, The Daemons and a bit of The Mind of Evil 6) was recorded offair in 1977, although wasn't used in restoration work until 1992 onwards. The last colour quad tape to be found was the PAL copy of Death to the Daleks 1 in 1991. Before that, Inferno (in NTSC) and Frontier in Space (in PAL) were both found in 1984 in Canada & Australia respectively.

Whoops, I meant 1985.
Also, a black & white quad tape of The Time Warriors 6 was recovered in 1987. While not in colour, it was of superior quality to the NTSC print recovered from Canada in 1983.

re colourisation, it will be cheaper soon and I should think available for home computers within the next 5 years or so. its just a question of recovering colour clips or stills to get the scale right.
