I received a complete Steptoe Box Set as an Xmas present & to be honest I am most disappoint with the content of Disc 13 the two Xmas specials
They are cut down versions of the VHS realises of 1986 & 1991 when in the Case of both 73 & 74 Specials the full versions were supplied.
The 1973 Special "THE PARTY" suffers worst from this editing....
The way it evolves from Harold planning to go on holiday abroad to being manipulated (as ever!) by Albert to staying at home, to Harold thinking he will enjoy a huge party.... only to find on Xmas morn he has chicken pox courtesy of Albert is absolute full on comic genius! I simply love this episode.
Coupled together with the 1974 Special, which is is many ways the opposite as you cannot watch in in hindsight without regret knowing it's the last ever episode but still hugely festive and enjoyable (with THAT twist at the end!) , made this a must buy for me.
But like many others I suspect I was disappointed with the edits. This is a mistake by the BBC pure and simple as they have used the wrong versions for the DVD pressing.
But if you do not have these on VHS it's still worth Having as they are two fantastic episodes to enjoy all year round - but if you have a VHS copy of either then think twice before buying the DVD ,
As I say the editing is poor on both But these two major Chunks are cut all together ,"The Party" (1973) - the scene in which Harold is paying off the balance for his holiday, some of the dialogue is missing, but also also the scene is very badly edited as Harold is not shown speaking in Spanish to the couple in the travel agents, and not finishing the scene by leaving the shop & the couple cancelling their holiday to avoid meeting him again. The other instance on this episode is Harold writing the greeting on Albert's Christmas present
