I have a friend who frequents car boot sales. I have told him to always look out for quarter inch tape and old home movie film (something else I collect) for me. Today he came back with a pile of quarter inch reels, 29 in all. Most of it looks quite old, and hardly any of it is labelled at all. However, one of the boxes that IS labelled reads '

don't know as yet. I have, however, played the tape marked 'ISIRTA'. It contains series 7, programmes 9-13. It's listenable, but certainly not hi-fi quality, not as good as the re-claimed Hancock 'Blackboard Jungle', but then, I don't know how much restoration work was put in on that). There are no statiopn idents at all on the tape, the programme being faded out at the end of the sig. tune. Of vague interest (maybe) is that at the end of prog.13 the tape was allowed to run to the end rather than be stopped. Consequently we have a station announcement 'From Birmingham, The Archers...' and then the first 6-7 minutes of that episode, which if the tape was a recording of the first tx of ISIRTA series 7, prog.13 makes it tx'ing on the 10th May 1970. Anyone?

I've compared my original broadcast tapes of these ISIRTA episodes with the recent BBC7 transmissions and they're all identical.

I've now had time to play all these tapes. Most of them are completely blank, apart from the above mentioned ISIRTA tape, the only other tape of interest have some TV audio of Monty Python which I am passing on to a Python expert to verify that it is all known. We will let you all know !

There's something about the prospect of going through a pile of tapes, isn't there?. I've recently been going through 60-odd three inch reels that are filled with things like 'The Navy Lark' (which seem to be from the late sixties/early seventies), 'Doctor In The House' (starring Richard Briers), and, would you believe, the complete Queen's speech from 1967!!!. Also on some of the tapes is a series called 'Battle Of The Atlantic', which by the sound of the links is from the sixties; does anyone have info about this programme?. Any details gratefully recieved.

There's something about the prospect of going through a pile of tapes, isn't there? There certainly is. It can be annoying though, especially if the box containing the tape has many crossings out so you can see what *used to be* on the tape but was then recorded over. You can end up with some right old crud on the tape when they recorded over some things which would have some people crying into their beer!
