Guys.
When going through a room full of 78rpm library discs on Saturday at the very soon to close Pebble Mill, I discovered some master TX discs of 'The Archers from 1953, plus some inserts discs. According to the Archers historian and archivist there are no other surviving episodes from that year. There is one complete episode plus two of four TX discs for another (probably an omnibus edition). There are also several insert discs for missing and existing episodes. Apparently some other episodes were discovered in the radio archive last week at Pebble Mill.
There will be a more thorough search of the soon to be cleared shelves tomorrow!
Regards,
Paul

I think it's great to discover something at least as an example and once again it has only survived because it was misfiled. Having survived several moves of the discs, the bulk will be thrown away as they are effects disc copies of what is already in the archive. However, these actual episodes clearly should be in an archive somewhere and the radio archive are reportedly very pleased. Let's hope one or two others turn up.

Any other well known "Gems" Paul? I should find out more in the new year! However, although there were other inserts for other missing shows, these were just effects discs, cars, sheep, etc... played in with a live voice over...and we have all the effects anyway! Cheers, Paul

First time I've spotted this thread and what wonderful news it brings! A great find, indeed. I just hope even more was found since the original post.

I would like to add my delight at reading this news from Paul Vanezis.
What I find very interesting is the fact that there has been a number of discoveries at Pebble Mill and these radio programmes are from the early 1950s. Is there any known explanation for this? (Was Pebble Mill an unofficial archive for television, radio and recorded music?)
Yours,

What are the chances of these being cleaned up and broadcast?
