BBC worldwide are planning a collectors edition release of the 1st series of this show, however, there are only a total of 13 of the 22 episodes in the BBC archive or Transcription archive. If anyone has any of the missing shows (details on the Kenneth Williams App Soc site - http://www.kennethwilliams.org.uk) then please contact me so that I can inform Ted Kendall directly and speed up the return of the shows so a restoration is possible. Of the existing eps of Beyond Our Ken, series 1 (1958) was released in a box set by the BBC in Sept 2004; series 2 (1959) in Feb 2005. And that was it - nothing else has been released since then. Series 3 - 7 (1960 - 64) have remained unreleased on CD. Does anyone know why these collector's box sets stopped after series 2? Both box sets are now OOP.
Round The Horne series 1 - 4 (1965 - 68) had earlier had a complete series release, in 4 box sets, between June 2002 and April 2004. All box sets (except series 3) are now OOP.
As most of these box sets are now out of print, presumably they must have sold fairly well. So I'm puzzled as to why the plug was pulled on Beyond Our Ken after series 2.

Poor Sales perhaps.

If you go through most of the 'sell your item here' section for these shows, you seem to get a bit more information about sales. Both are at the million mark (in rankings, not numbers) for their category. Both are ranked at the million mark (that's rank, not copies sold) for 'Books',which is what they're under. One's an audio book serial, the other audio book comedy. The first series isn't to be had for love or money, new or second-hand,while the second series can be bought off a private seller for 150 pounds (!). At least we know that however many copies Amazon had for sale, the've sold out. The failure to release more series could be due to poor sales.I suppose that there are no clearance problems or any concerns with audio quality?

When they go OOP, they tend to be offered at inflated prices on Amazon Marketplace. The complete radio archive of Round The Horne (all 4 series box sets in one, limited edition of 1000, case) is currently being offered by a seller for £950, new and sealed. The RRP for this complete set when it was released in Feb 2005 was £255.
Round The Horne is now complete, with the few missing eps being sourced from off-air tapes (restored and enhanced). The edited down Transcription Services tapes have had the missing sections restored from off-airs. However, Beyond Our Ken still has a number of missing eps, particularly from the earlier (late 50s, early 60s) series.
Beyond Our Ken (1958 - 64) and Round The Horne (1965 - 68) was basically the same show with the same cast, but with an enforced change of name in 1965 due to a change of scriptwriters and a consequent introduction of some new features and characters. It's a great shame that the BBC has chosen not to release Beyond Our Ken series 3 - 7 on CD, leaving the years 1960 - 64 unreleased.

Wasn't there some fairly serious disagreement between creative personnel and the BBC on Beyond On Ken? Is that why that series didn't progress beyond the second box set?
It is interesting to see that The Navy Lark is doing well enough for Series 7 to have just been released so there is still a market for these things.
