HELP! Can anybody confirm what different formats of U-Matic there are...
i.e. are BVU / U-matic-SP & U-Matic High Band exactly the same formats of U-Matic but just different terms?
thanks in advance.....

IIRC...
A low-band U-Matic machine can play low-band tapes in colour and high-band tapes in monochrome. It can only record in low-band.
A high-band machine can play both HB and LB tapes in colour. Not sure if it can record in LB.
A U-Matic SP deck can play SP, HB and LB. SP is a further development of HB, using chrome tapes for better video response and lower noise.
"BVU" is the designation Sony gave to its higher-end HB and SP U-Matic decks (it supposedly stands for Broadcast Video Unit).

ISTR that BVU only referred to SP machines. The designation for high-band was a "U-Matic H" badge on the machine. But I could be wrong... it's been a long time.
