I know this show is not the hubbub of rock'n'roll (then again neither are shows like Crackerjack or Sez Les, and we have good clips from them....), but every few years a decent act would be on. The Beatles from 63 obv exists (I have a copy with boards, etc), but I'm intrigued about on I believe Elton John did in 1972 (?) singing 'I Think I'm Going to Kill Myself Tonight', with the very wonderful 'Legs' Larry Smith tap dancing. This sounds like a joke, but I'm SURE it isn't. App'ly EJ didn't go down to well.....Info, please, if you know......

Elton was indeed on the 1972 show performing "I Think I'm Gonna Kill Myself" as well as "Crocodile Rock". The show exists in the BBC archive.

Just out of interest, Andrew, which editions of the Royal Variety Performance exist in the archive?

Not wanting to pre-empt Andrew at all, but don't all of the televised RVPs survive? ATV did 1960 & 1961, before the alternate year system began in 1962.

Just out of interest, Andrew, which editions of the Royal Variety Performance exist in the archive? The BBC holds the complete shows from 1962, 1964, 1970, and all even numbered years thereafter (the 1990 show was 'A Royal Birthday Gala', shown in August on the Queen Mother's birthday), plus film inserts and a trailer from 1966 (and the odd news item).

Thanks Andrew. How did the '66 and '68 shows come to be the odd ones out in that they are missing?

No idea I'm afraid - the archive doesn't keep files about why programmes were kept or not.

presumably they wiped everything unless there was a specific or commercial reason for not doing so. or was it more random than that??

Elton's perormance of 'Crocodile Rock' from the Royal Variety Show 1972 is included on the Elton 60 - Live From Madison Square Garden 2 DVD collection on the 'rare and unseen' disc.

It's complete rubbish that Elton was supposed to have been booed.
I now have a copy of the performances he did and he was well-received.
