Thanks to both of you - very helpful!
Incidentally, do we know who the man in the extraordinary shirt actually is? I guessed he was Johnny Johnson as 'Blame It On The Pony Express' can be heard in the background while he's being interviewed by Tony Blackburn, but as that bit's mute it's a bit hard to tell! He could equally be Horace Faith, but I can't find a decent picture of either of them to check.

high can anybody tell me when the first totp was recorded in colour and who was on the show and also if any the clips have survived thanks This would probably have been the first edition to be transmitted after 15/11/69 (the day colour began on BBC-1). I forget the actual date offhand but it would have been the twenty-something of November! No clips survive as far as I know although there is in existence a bit of what appears to be a (colour) studio runthrough for the audience dancing to Sugar Sugar. I recall such a thing occurring in the show at this time myself (Nov / Dec 1969) and on other occasions they showed the cartoon clip of the song.

Possibly the 20th November - I have the Radio Times at home which makes interesting reading! One of the first programmes BBC1 put out when starting colour TV was actually a Charlie Chaplin film!

high can anybody tell me when the first totp was recorded in colour and who was on the show and also if any the clips have survived thanks It was the 28th or 29th November - I know Thelma Houston was on it doing a Rolling Stones number (think it was Jumpin Jack Flash) Keith Badman used to a brilliant article every month in 'Record Collector' in the early 90's called Transmission Impossible. This episode was featured once with a comprehensive run through of the acts featured & episode in general. Seem to recall he stated only small extracts from the show exist although non surfaced to my knowledge

Yes I remember Badman's article. Thelma did indeed appear performing that song. Dusty Springfield was another act on the show. I can't remember who else was on it since some were not exactly big names. I do remember reading that it began minus titles since the colour title sequence were not yet ready and that it was hosted by - who else? - Jimmy Savile.
From what I remember Badman concluded saying that though the show didn't exist, the BBC held a small amount of colour material from the earliest colour shows. This I presume refers to some of those clips that have popped up on YouTube.
