Interesting this; I have it on good authority that some of the existing TOTP c. 1974 used not stills but brief clips of actual performances during the chart rundown.
Obviously these are silent but apparently the acts include Barry Blue; Stephanie De Sykes and the Stylistics.
The hits they would be singing; albeit brief; could be redubbed as they would be identifiable by the edition date of the show they feature in.

You're right John. Not too sure how long this went on for but in some cases the only remaining footage of some TOTP performances were at the beginning of the show during the Top 30 rundown. As far as i know this went on from at least mid to late 1974.They had a mixture of live and still clips lasting one or two seconds overlaid with the particular number that they were in the charts that week.Anyone who happens to have a few complete shows from this year can take a look.Maybe we can make a list of all the TOTP's performance deletions that only exist in one second clips!

It was happening in 1971 with Jig A Jig-East Of Eden being played while countdowns were shown.

Point taken Steve but (i think) what John was talking about was during the top 30 countdown for each of the 30 places a little moving clip(or still) was shown of the artist who was at that number. In some cases that very brief one or two second clip was of a now deleted performance. It wasn't quite a film but more than a still if you see what i mean!

This is interesting as these shows were transmitted live and recorded as they went out. Presumably as part of a deal for export with their management which also ensured their preservation.
