Nick, the charts were announced on a Tuesday and generally dated as weekending the saturday. ILYLML shot straight in at number 1 on Tuesday 13th November 1973, was on the (surviving) TOTP broadcast 15/11/73 and the chart itself is dated Saturday 17th November 1973. I'm assuming Bell released the single the previous Monday (5th November 1973)

Singles were released on Fridays back then so the release date would have been 9/11/73.

Singles were released on Fridays back then so the release date would have been 9/11/73. Friday was indeed the usual release day for singles, but some labels had worked out that if they wanted a high initial entry in the chart it would be wise to get their stuff out earlier in the week : Polydor certainly released the Slade singles earlier than a Friday, which is why they had 3 singles straight in at #1 in 1973 : as GG had the only other single to do that in 1973, I would guess that Bell had cottoned on to it by then too.
