While driving at about 7.30 tonight, my son tuned into Radio 2 (by mistake of course!) and we caught the last minute or so of a version of Space Oddity which sounded very unusual to me, but which the presenter simply said was David Bowie. It wasn't live, but certainly wasn't the Dudgeon/Buckmaster orchestrated version which was on the single with which I am familiar. The Radio 2 Playlist for the programme gives the following info:
Title: SPACE ODDITY Artist: DAVID BOWIE CD: MUSIC OF THE YEAR 1969 Label: SPECTRUM: 545 05
Can anyone expand this?

Was it the Love Me Till Tuesday version, from '68? As in the Ken Pitt film?

Didn't he originally record this version under the name Davy Jones ? I actually prefer this rarely heard version, alot more psychedelic, it's got a good promo film which goes with it too..

Yes, it was the 1969 film version. I'm disappointed at my memory failing me, since I did see that version on TOTP back in 1973(?) when a re-release of Space Oddity got to No 1. Obviously the film rather than the soundtrack embedded itself in my memory!
BTW, does anybody know how to record from a Realplayer etc streaming?

Dunno, but if you're wanting the Pitt film, it's out on DVD with an 'orrible cover (though with an added extra of the mime-based Pierrot In Turquoise show from Scotland, conveniently mastered from a colour telerecording) via Universal.
