Are there any interesting stories surrounding any of the late 60's/early 70s Top Of The Pops's and how they survived? The quality varies with the shows from the obvious pristine masters (i.e. 28/11/82 & 15/11/73) to the on-air early video recording of the 22/6/72....

depends what you call interesting, many of the 60's clips were made by engineers and other tech types secretly and aginst all the BBC rules, smuggled out or hidden in air vents and ceiling tiles. lets hope more was copied and is yet to turn up.

No afraid not, threre doesn't seem to be much info on this sort of thing, I supose people want their privacy or it just isn't known, I'd like to hear the stories as well though.

Yeah, that's the one, though the order is: Sweet (& charts), Gary Glitter (both missing from the copy in circulation which starts in the middle of a film made for) Elvis, Free/Pan's People, Argent, New Seekers, Dana, The Move, Don McLean, B.Bumble/Audience dancing (playout)... and yes, Steve it is an Ed Stewart show.

Just been informed that there is a Goodies DVD which includes a booklet containing the following info :
"The Goodies episode (Come Dancing) was repeated on BBC1 at 8pm on Thursday 22 June 1972. During the 1970's, the colour videotape of the show was wiped by the BBC when it was felt to be of no further commercial value. In late 1998, an off-air colour 2 inch videotape recording came to light at BBC Scotland in Glasgow; this held both the 1972 repeat of "Come Dancing" and the preceding edition of TOTP. Although the episode has been through a restoration process, viewers may see a difference in quality from other episodes contained in this volume."

I suppose we should be grateful that the BBC decided, even if it was after a lot of badgering from some of us on the old TOTP2 forum, to show the excellent "California Man" by The Move in the last ever week of TOTP2 back in 2004. A shame we never got to see other performances from this almost complete 22/6/72 edition, especially The New Seekers with "Circles" or Pan's People dancing to Free's "A Little Bit Of Love". Even Argent doing "Tragedy" would have been appreciated. So what happens now, will the BBC re-instate TOTP2 now that TOTP is going off air? Seems like a good move to me judging by their bulgeing archives even if 95% of it is missing before 1977.
