Rediffusion Clip Found?
A mate from the U.S.A. has given me a clip of the Zombies. It was aired 12 Jul 66 iby CBS. He states it is from the Rediffusion show of 20 Oct 66.
This is what tv tome says:
Hippodrome was a variety series produced in London by Rediffusion. Although it was a British series, the 1966 Hippodrome series first premiered in the U.S. (a few months before its UK premire). In the US, CBS aired the series from July through September 1966 as a Summer replacement series for "The Red Skelton Hour." Because CBS was now broadcasting its prime time shows in color, Rediffusion recorded the series on color videotape.
In September 1966, the series premiered in the U.K. on the ITV network. (ITV televised the series in monocrome as color TV broadcasting had not yet begun in Britain).
Sounds encouraging as the Yanks may have preserved the shows.

Kev,
I would try to follow it up. See if some missing material can be returned. Worth a shot.
Lance.

If this is the 20/10/1966 show then it's in the archives already (in black and white though IIRC) - one of only two known to survive. It does open the possibility fo there being others though? Yep it's monochromw and must be that one.
I found a thread afterwards that I missed on it as it was buried in another one.
Looks promising thousgh. The yanks seemed to have kept more than us. Who knows what's in the CGS archives.
Well worth a dvd release if they could clear those blessed rights. That plus the Cool for Cats episode.
This rights business annoys me. When everything stays locked in a vault, noone makes a penny.

As said before a techinical and innovative landmark of a show.
(where else would you see Woody Allen boxing kangeroos?)
You would have thought the NFTVA would have been pursuing colour material of this?

I forget who succinctly made this point in the past.. but the powerful musicians union in this country were ultimately responsible for the destruction of nearly all music/variety TV shows. Repeat performance clearance issues became such a legal and financial minefield for tv companies that few shows of this genre were ever repeated due to the prohibitive costs and were consequently junked or wiped.

Yeah that didn't do themselves any favours in the long run did they.
One thing that puzzles me. Union power is often blamed for the demise of RSG and TYLS.
How come TOTP flourished? Did the Beeb take a different view to ITV?

I seem to recall that the whole Hippodrome Show featuring The Zombies was discovered by a member of the Doctor Who RT a few years ago. I remember a posting on here to that effect; i'm pleased the edition is back in the archives (the NFTVA presumably?)

Annoyingly, every link is now dead! Does anyone have a list of surviving 'Hippodrome' shows? A "holy grail" of mine is The Searchers performing 'Take It Or Leave It' on the show (broadcast 26th July 1966 in the USA and 3rd November 1966 in the UK).

Thanks Tony! Very interesting stuff. I still can't find the full survival status of US episodes though... anybody?
