Has anyone compiled a list of what is known to exist of pre-1976 TOTP,(as opposed to what is still in the BBC archive). Since there is SO MUCH material that exists outside of the archive (and which they have little interest in getting back) it would be very interesting to see what we can compile. Anyone want to give it a bash? I'd include audios and tiny clips like Kev's recent discovery as well!

do any of the surviving top of the pops outside of the bbc contain any Olivia newton-john ? the country roads clip from 1973 and the Sam clip from 1977 there is lots of her songs missing between 71-77 everything after 77 is still there at the bbc a friend whop worked at the BBC went into the archives and pulled the country roads clip of the original master but he told me the sound was messed up 'so it seams the bbc still had the audio backing tracks too as they were able to fix it and use it on totp2

Hi Peter, To the best of my knowledge, 'Top Of The Pops' radio programs were radio broadcasts put together by the BBC and often voiced over by Brian Matthew. These programs were made for overseas (read 'Commonwealth countries') use and were never intended for British transmission. As such, the songs would be sourced from existing BBC radio programs such as Saturday Club, Top Gear, Easybeat etc (hence the recordings often being different to the released records). These then would be pressed onto vinyl (known as Transcription Discs) and sent out of The British Isles. Though the title of this long running series is the same as the TV show, the music on the transcription discs have no relation to the music screened on the TV series. ONJ would therefore have recorded some exclusive versions of her songs for a BBC radio program like one of the ones I have mentioned above and one or two of these would have then ended up being used in the TOTP radio series. That is the reason Kaleidoscope/Fairfield Parlour have been able to release a BBC sessions CD as some of these transcription discs have survived. In fact, most of the original programs which were used to create these TOTP radio shows were not archived meaning that the transcription discs which survive are in many cases all that is left of these shows. Cheers LD

Some of her hits may be represented there. She also appears in the 1972 BBC 'Its Cliff' European special, which exists. theres also an official British promo for 'If not for you' shown on 'Before they were famous'.

P.S. the current John Miller (name posted by accident a few minutes ago by me) is me, but due to another 'me' I'm he of the name above (sorry, confusing - 'I am the Walrus!..') I've a fair idea, but haven't compiled a definitive list. It should be worth adding, some of these may now exist at the BBC, hopefully all will at some point. 1966 - Kinks (Sunny afternoon) Walker Bros (Baby you don't have to tell me) Manfred Mann (Semi detatched surburban Mr James) 1967 - Hendrix (Purple Haze) (Wind cries Mary - mute) Manfred Mann (Ha ha said the clown) Kinks (Autumn Almanac) Keith Badman (Record collector) was rumoured to have found 'Jennifer Juniper' (Donovan) & Kinks 'Wonderboy' 1968 in an overseas archive. Yardbirds documentary early 90s showed a fleeting super 8mm clip of an unidentified performance by them on TOTP (66 - 67). (Yardbirds the most blueswailing band). 1970s - Won't list as I can't recall offhand, numerous clips used by ZDF on 'Disco' (I'll go back on this later). 1970 - Who (The seeker) Keith Badman rumour - Cliff Richard (Goodbye Sam, Hello Samantha) 1973 - Who (5.15) Nazareth (Bad bad boy) B/W Suzi Quatro (48 crash) B/W 1974 - Mud (Tiger feet, in red costumes) Ronnie Lane (How come?) Jonathan King (Satisfaction) Sweet (Teenage Rampage - 2 performances) Queen (Seven seas of Rhye) 10cc (Silly Love) Cozy Powell (Na na na & Man in Black) Alvin Stardust (You, you, you) Gary Glitter (Always yours). Will update this when I can. cheers.
