I wondered whether the BBC recorded and kept all the 'Jazz from Montreux' broadcasts ? The 1978 period coincided with my interest in Jazz & Jazz rock. I recall the 'John McLaughlin - One truth band' appearence. The track was 'Friendship' from his 'Johnnie McLaughlin - electric guitarist' L.P. McLaughlin dressed in a black T shirt, all in black in fact I think.
The solo playing was far stronger than his recorded version which was a remarkable feeble effort for him. I recorded this on audio off air at the time and kept it. A good piece.

I used to watch these myself around the late '70s / early '80s. One in particular featured Weather Report and Cannonball Adderley, which i'd like to know if it still survives.

All but one of "Jazz from Montreux" survives (19/5/79) - I don't know why that one was unlucky!
John McLaughlin and Weather Report both appeared on the edition tx'd 22/4/77 (the former with the group Shakti, playing the tracks 'Joy' and 'India', Weather Report performed 'Cannonball' and 'Black Market')
(This is all I can find out at the moment, it may be there were other appearances/tracks that are not listed on the BBC computer!)

Oh, and I can't find any trace of Cannonball Adderley on "Jazz from Montreux", though he did make appearances on the series "Jazz Ship" in 1975 (as well as "Jazz 625" in the 60s.)

Thanks for the very useful info, Andrew. I recall Weather Report doing Black Market in that edition. Could be that I mixed up Jazz Ship with this series though as regards Adderley. Do any of these survive, by the way?

The John McLaughlin performance I recall was FRIENDSHIP, a track from his 'Johnnie McLaughlin - electric guitarist' L.P. That album contained his first post Sri Chinmoy (Guru) stuff and possibly his weakest recorded solo playing! The record was a duet with Carlos Santana.
On 'Montreux', Mclaughlin reworked the track with his one truth band. He wore black to signify a break with his religious 'white clothes' period. He was using a Gibson 335 semi acoustic (same as Yes guitarist Steve Howe used). It was a much more charged, gutsy version. I recored the audio off air. think Humphrey Lyttleton introduced.
The L.P. was July 78 or so. This appearence would've been about 6 months later, so presumably 1978. Hope its one of the existing ones!!
