Forgot about this well known, powerful 60s track. Suddenly reminded watching BBC '20th century in song'. That show represented it with clips of Vietnam news footage. I wondered, seeming to distantly recall similar footage being compiled for TOTP at the time. Am I wrong? Wondered what other appearences exist. Theres one showing the artist actually in performance, think NTSC tape, but I don't know where its from. Presumably McGuire didn't actually appear on TOTP at the time? What about the thing I forgot about, where the BBC used to ban records from air play? I just thought, applying this for example, you would then realise maybe 'I am the walrus' for example never appeared on TOTP. I seem to recall the BBC didn't like the use of the words 'stupid bloody tuesday' and 'knickers'. The inoffensive B side (Hello Goodbye) was thus played as a hit. I recalled the promo though, probably as my sister would have watched the BBC 1 repeat of Magical mystery tour 1968. The other examples I know of are 'My generation' the Who, I thought as Daltrey seems to threaten to say the 'F' word as he stutters on 'all f - f - fade away..' apparently the BBC thought it ridiculed people with speech defects or stammers. Does anyone know of any similar cases or add to this info?

Presumably this is the clip of him surrounded by debris? It's been used as a clip here a couple of times. How does a UK person get hold of these Hullabaloo DVDs? They sound great but I fear they aren't on sale here...

The Kinks "Plastic Man" was allegedly banned from TOTP in April 1969 because it used the word "bum". Ray Davies had compiled a promotional film for TOTP which was never aired as a result: wonder what happened to that?

continuing on the Kinks thread....didn't the BBC make Ray Davies change a line in 'Lola' from 'champagne tastes just like cocoa cola' to 'champagne tastes just like cherry cola' for fear of advertising??

Ray Davies had compiled a promotional film for TOTP which was never aired as a result: wonder what happened to that? repeated close harmony "plastic bum"s but they had lemmon's ballad of jon and yoko with the word "Christ" so no consistency there. He probably still has the film himself, you could ask him if you want, www.raydavies.info/but don't count on an answer. alsothere must be a list somewhere of people who bought videos in the 60s and early 70s as many of them would have to be ordered, perhaps Sony, Phillips etc have lists, I'll look into this.

This is right. The BBC also changed the import cartoon 'Top cat' (Hanna Barbera) in 1962 - 64 title to 'The Boss Cat' using their own slide faded between opening and episode. This lasted up to about 1976 I think, also to avoid advertising on the BBC as 'Top cat' was then a brand name for a tinned cat food.

The DVD's can be ordered from Amazon.com but remember they are probably region one and in NTSC so make sure you have a multi region player,I bought several years ago and there are a few interesting performances

"Boss Cat" was used until 1989 - the series wasn't shown again on the BBC until 1999, when the original title sequence was reinstated. The series went out originally as "Top Cat" in May to August 1962, changing to "Boss Cat" when it started its second series in December 62.

Quick note: "Hello Goodbye" was actually the A-side of that particular Beatles single. As you say, "I Am The Walrus" was transmitted on the BBC as part of "Magical Mystery Tour".

I've got an old video of him doing "This Precious Time" (the follow-up to EOD) on Hullabaloo. Is that on the DVDs?
