Just been watching this archive based show and there was a small section about TOTP (Pan's People etc) - There was an interesting Jimmy Savile intro that I have never seen before and wonder if anyone knows exactly which edition it's from: It was black and white VT (as opposed to a standard 16mm b&w f/r) and I presume he was introducing "My Ding a ling" by Chuck Berry - the clip of which of course is in colour on original vt. So where does this black and white vt come from? Which edition?
Any help appreciated
Cheers

I think they just stripped the colour out of the standard version, Michael. Jim.

Didn't see it, but its probably from the 16/11/72 edition which exists in full albeit on B/W V/T. That Chuck Berry performance was featured in that edition.
I have never seen any links from this show, but other performances from this edition crop up on TOTP2 from time to time, most notably Gilbert O'Sullivan "Clair".

Just had a quick check on TOTP 2's Archive Holdings web page.
The B&W November 1972 clip was introduced by Saville, which was a straight performance.(See past TOTP 2 shows)
There was a performance on the Xmas 72 show listed too.
Is that the source of the colour(Rolf Harris) clip? (Only transmitted by TOTP 2 once, to my knowledge!)
How come they didn't use the intro from the Xmas 72 show, or wasn't there one, or perhaps Saville's was funnier ?

The Chuck Berry clip from 28/12/72 was introduced by Tony Blackburn and there was also a quick chat with Rolf before the number. I don't know why they didn't use that clip as it was in colour and would have looked better, but I guess they have their reasons

the saville intro was from nov 72 and the complete show survives in the BBC vaults in B/w, (some sections of the same said show survive in colour in ZDF's germany)
this chuck berry is a live perf to the xmas one as the xmas one has rolf doing a picture overlayed which says happy 1973 on it....
the saville one is uniquely the same perf but without the rolfie's art slot.... but this one is b/w
