(knowing that the original studio performances dont exist, in some private hands maybe) my attention has bveen now moved to the promo films which WERE shown on TOTP, and the original footage only
going through theTOTP database, I have found that
Beatles - I feel fine & Day Tripper (promo's) that were shown on TOTP back in the 60's were shown on The Tube back in 1987
can anyone shed any light to which of the Beatles original b/w promo's exist, and (b/w when normally would be colour) and do they exist in full, and which shows were they repeated on including TOTP2

I seem to remember loads of artists making promo films and although in the TOTP database they are down as not there I wonder if they may exist in private hands.

I'm not sure whether the two alternate films of 'Paperback Writer' and 'Rain' exist though,as I have never seen any of them bootlegged(the b/w studio video of PW does exist). Most of the films/videos were sent out by Apple to promote the '62-66' & '67-70' cd issues in 1993, and the '1' album a few years back.

Pete
Have you tried looking on the Anthology DVD set?
I bought this as a Xmas present for my Dad. He has finished watching it so I'll keep an eye out if you haven't seen it yet yourself.

With the exception of “Eleanor Rigby/Yellow Submarine” & “All you need is love“, promo films exist for all UK Beatle singles from “Help!” onwards (in some cases there is more than one version), the 1st “Help!” promo is the performance from the film minus the credits and darts being thrown at the screen, “All you need is love” was of course performed for “Our World” and effectively doubled up as a promo. There were 3 promo films shot for “Rain” (1 exclusive colour indoor vt for Ed Sullivan, 1 colour outdoors at Chiswick house and 1 b&w) and 4 for “Paperback writer” (same as “Rain” plus an extra b&w one for some reason), they also mimed these two tracks live on TOTP, all survive including the multiple PB & Rain clips. Anthology only confuses matters as this creates new versions of promo’s by splicing different versions together and in some cases, adding out-takes.

The term promo is a bit vague as well as there are both film and video promos. As mentioned above, all the NEMS/Apple/Intertel Beatles promos (video and film) still exist. There may even be extra takes on the VT reels of some of these, as Mark Lewisohn's book suggests. As Syd says, things are made more confusing by Apple effectively creating new promos for the Anthology comprised of composite edits of the old material.
What Pete is probably talking about here though are the promo films made by TOTP to represent a song by an artist not on the show that week. The Yellow Submarine / Eleanor Rigby one plus another for Hello Goodbye seem to be missing (the latter was really just compiled stock footage and not specially shot for TOTP - which blurs the definitions even more!). There may be one or two others of the same sort. Most of the specially shot TOTP films made before 1970 seem to be missing though (possibly some exist in private hands, possibly the cameramen who shot them). From early 1970 up to the mid '70s, a lot of these individual films seem to survive at the BBC. These have been indicated on the TOTP Database. Hope this clears things up.

When I said TOTP films from 1970 onwards, I was referring to all artists, not just The Beatles, by the way. Also, when I said about Yellow Sub / Hello Goodbye and a few others missing, I was specifically referring to The Beatles. In general, all TOTP films pre-1970 are missing.
Just re-read my own (possibly confusing) words back there and so I thought i'd clear that bit up!

One missing Beatle Gem might be a TOTP “Hello Goodbye” film, I don't have the details to hand but there were at least two new versions of “Hello Goodbye” created by the BBC when the Beatles own “Twist” version for the UK was rejected as it was deemed to include a small amount of forbidden miming, the first BBC creation used clips from “A hard days night” which the fabs weren’t too happy about, so the BBC then filmed the Beatles editing/watching the “Magical Mystery Tour” film - has anybody seen this since? I think it was included on part one of the 1967 Xmas editions (sadly not the one that was saved).

Pete Have you tried looking on the Anthology DVD set? I bought this as a Xmas present for my Dad. He has finished watching it so I'll keep an eye out if you haven't seen it yet yourself. I have the DVD set and quite frankly i'm very disappointed. the songs are incomplete and over spliced with interview, it's high time that the proper promo's and TV raraties were issued on DVD.

The Beatles also recorded TOTP mimed performance clips for the song A Hard Day's Night and also for others like Things We Said Today. All clips now wiped of course.

All the TOTP promo films are listed on the TOTP database, Pete. If you want to know what they were, just go through year by year.

For the release of the Beatles "1's" album a promo video was released in the US. This is the source for the much bootlegged DVD. Does anyone know if any of these videos were used on TOTP's?
