Apologies if this subject has been covered before, but I was wondering how the Sandie Shaw TOTP rehearsal footage (I think it's her singing "long live love" ?) still exists?
Bearing in mind the extremely small number of surviving TOTP sixties performances, it just seems odd that this rehearsal footage, (featuring Pete Murray in the background) actually survives? Anyone know how long the actual footage is? Presumably it's just Sandie's performance that exists from this particular session?
Is there any more known rehearsal footage known to exist from the 60/70/80's?
Any info really appreciated !

Hi Paul!
It's a question I've been meaning to ask myself re 'Long Live Love'. I've seen a still of the actual performance, but nothing else.
I do get the feeling that there's got to be some rehearsal/outtake footage from the 70s and 80s somewhere.I remember you saying something about Amy Grant doing endless takes of 'Baby Baby', and you actually being present during the All About Eve 'disaster'.Have you any more recollections from your time as a TOTP regular?

Kev
What a good memory!
Yes, I was present for a recording in May 1991 when Amy Grant was performing "Baby Baby" - and you are right - it was endless takes - I think, from memory, it was redone about 7 or 8 times - mainly due to dry ice going 'ott' or incorrect camera angles etc..
..and yes - the All About Eve thing! Brilliant stuff! What more can I say !!
There were many times that things went wrong during my regular time on the show. One other particular occasion I can recall now is a group called 'The Levellers' performing their single (can't remember the name of it - it was 1997 I think though) and half way through they stopped playing (they were singing and playing live at Elstree) as they'd forgotten the lyrics !
As I say, many other bits and pieces when performances would be reshot time and time again - I think alot of the time, it was mainly due to technical reasons rather than the artists though ..
But yes, going back to rehearsal footage etc - I am sure there must be some material exisiting from at least the seventies/eighties.. Mind u, I heard a rumour that the BBC had (or were) in the process of junking the original studio sessions and obviously just keeping the original show ... so who knows?
As I say, there were so many times (on outtake footage) that things were redone during my 42 or so visits that there must be hundreds of outtakes/footage taken - thing is - was any of it presevered? Probably wouldn't matter or bother alot of people, but for real fans of the show, it would be interesting to know....

I would have thought it was either an engineer or VT guy that kept a recording of this stuff? When I worked in the vT Library, it was one of my duties to actually wipe the 1" studio recordings of anything from sitcoms to music programmes to political stuff. We only used to keep the TX version of the programme.

to be honest, within my department, I can think of no-one who would do that, becuase, quite frankly, they just weren't interested in it!! I can't vouch for people like VT Operators or Vision Engineers though!! Some of those people could even be making their own 'private' copies of stuff, rather than what I was dealing with, which was the 'official' recordings.
